November 30, 2007

From the hive...

Bearhive Dear Parents,

I hope that you all had a relaxing Thanksgiving holiday!  Now the countdown begins!  Only 3 more weeks until the winter holidays!  Just a few things......

Yearbooks are now on sale.  The price is $25 if you purchase before December 21, the last day before the winter break.  Any yearbooks purchased after the break will cost $30.  Please make your checks out to Sope Creek Elementary School.

Our first Reading contest was a great success!!  A big thank you to Mrs. Holt for suggesting the idea, and for supplying November prizes.  Our top two readers read over 1,000 and 2.000 minutes!  Way to go!  Next reading logs are due December 21 and because I know they can still do it, I did NOT change the required 400 minutes per month.  They will have only 3 weeks in which to complete and return.  The top two readers will be awarded December's prizes!  Please remember that this reading is required for all third graders.  A few students have not yet turned in their logs for this month.  Please do so as soon as possible.  I record minutes each month for each student.  Thanks!

Multiplication checklists for oral practice went home today.  These are 6,7,8 and 7,8,9.  Please continue to have your child practice these daily.  They are getting faster and love when we play "Around the World"!  These checklists do not need to be returned.

Be sure to have your child check out some cool math websites for fun and practice with multiplication and division:

A big thank you to Mrs. Tennant for helping with a class project!  She worked way longer on it than she let on and I appreciate it SO much!  It is out in the hallway and looks GREAT!  Also, the students will go up and down the hallway collecting information about different holidays and their origins.  Thank you Mrs. Tennant!

Another big thank you to Mrs. Jones who is coordinating our Holiday Party!!  And thank you in advance to all of the parents making plans to assist.  Please say "Yes" if you are contacted and can help in any way!  Mrs. Jones has sent out an email asking for help as well as a list of supplies needed for each center.  If she does not have your email and you would like to help, please email or jot me a note and I will hook you up!

Finally, as much as I hate to ask, because I know you've given so much already, we have a list of "desperately needed supplies" either because we have run out, or are working on a project that will be put to very good use!

Sanitizing wipes to keep our class germ-free (well, germ-controlled)

Kleenex (We are down to 1 box left!)

Any kind of "Funky" pasta shapes (not Elbows, but all or any of the following...we need lots:  Bowtie, Wagonwheel, curly, fusilli, etc.  If each student brings in one box that would be perfect!  THANK YOU)

Metallic Gold Spray Paint (2 cans needed)

Metallic Silver Spray Paint (2 cans needed)

Paper Towels

Multiplication_2

It's time to start practicing those multiplication math facts every day!  We've been working on these as we sing to a RAP CD each day, and the students are working on completing a multiplication activity booklet in class.  Please continue to work on facts 0-5.  Some of us are taking the 5 minute drills at this time.  Remember, when your child demonstrates 90% or higher on addition and subtraction timed tests, he or she will move into multiplication.  Very soon we will all need to be taking the multiplication drills.  This is why it's important that your child practice every day.

Won't You support the SmartKids campaign?  Our wonderful Foundation is very excited about the possibility of adding innovative learning to every classroom this year with SmartBoards.  In order to make this a reality, 100% participation is needed from each and every Sope Creek family.  Please remember, NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL, AND your gift is tax deductible!!  Currently, third grade is at 19% of the overall $100,000 goal.  Classes with the highest participation in dollar amount will have SmartBoards in their classes.  Thank you for your donations!!!

Orderpizza

PizzaguyPapa John's Pizza Nights for the rest of this year are as follows:  November 13; December 11; January 8; February 12; March 11; April 15; and May 13.  When your family orders pizza on these dates, our school gets money!

Reminder:  If you have not sent in the permission form for our class pictures to be posted on the blog, please do so as soon as possible.  We'd love to see the pictures we have gathered of our class.  Thanks very much, and have a wonderful weekend.
