WEEK 12 NEWSLETTER

ACADEMICS:

Language Arts: No Literacy Story from the Reading Series.  For next week, we will be using various fall stories for teaching different skills. 

Math:  New Unit:  2-D and 3-D shapes. 

Writing: We are continuing to work on writing sentences in a story, capitalization and punctuation.  Work at home on these same skills by having your child write a complete thought each night, making sure they use a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, and punctuation at the end.  You will be amazed at how fast your child's ability to write a complete thought and expand on it will grow!  :) 

Social Studies:  Past and Present

Health:  Nutrition

Homework: 

The next two weeks of homework will be a little different until we begin a new story in our Reading Series.  Here are the changes:

Language Arts:  Free Read will be Monday - Wednesday and Poetry will remain on Thursday night.          

Math:  Find 2-D and 3-D Shapes around your house, and talk with your child about the different shapes. 

Writing:  Have your child write one complete sentence for you each night... Check for complete thought, end punctuation, and a capital letter.

Nutrition:  Talk with your children about healthy foods and unhealthy foods, and why we need to make good choices when we eat. 

FIELD TRIP FORMS: 

We have most of the Field Trip forms... We're missing just a couple of them.  If you have not sent in your field trip money or permission form, please do that as soon as possible!  We need to send that money to our Wonderful Field Trip Presentors.  Thank you.

WEDDING TEA ON MONDAY:

The Wedding Tea was a HUGE success!  Ms. Reagan and her 4th graders were so touched by  your thoughtfulness and generousity.  Thank you so much for all that you donated for this special event.  We really appreciate all that you did!  Your children were so beautiful and handsome!  They were delightful to watch what wonderful manners they have!  Thank you for making this day SO special!   

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY:

Our school decided to honor the memory of Dr. Karen Looft on October 27th, the national day of service.  If you haven't turned in your paper stating what you and your family did on this day, please make sure you send it in to us, and we'll make sure it gets to the right place.  The school will be making a memory book for the Looft family to show them what everyone did on that day.  If you decided to participate, please send us in a note on a piece of paper to include in the book. 

I LOVE A BOOK DAY:

I LOVE A BOOK DAY was a huge success!!!!  The children were adorable in their character costumes!  Thank you SO much for taking time out for this project, and helping your child with this particular project.  We enjoyed seeing them, and they enjoyed the parade and story parents that read to all of our classes!

Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered to help with our Wedding Tea for Ms. Reagan and our 4th grade buddies.  The children are SO excited to give this tea for them, and are thrilled that we are dressing up for the Wedding Tea on Monday!  We will be having the tea around 9:30, so please make sure that all food and drinks are delivered to the front office by then.  We really appreciate all of your generosity and your time on this project.  Your children are so caring, considerate and loving of their book buddies and their teacher.

The book orders have not come in quite yet, but we will send them home as soon as they arrive and we can get them distributed.

These home projects should be fun for you and your child.  Enjoy this time working together to make memories!  :)

WEEK 10 NEWSLETTER

ACADEMICS:

Language Arts: Little Gorilla

Beginning the week of October 29- the first week of November, we are not going to have a literacy story from our series due to Unit 2 testing and our short first week of November.  We will be doing some literary studies with some other children's books during this time.  We will begin a new story in our series the second week of November. 
Math:  Continue to work on Addition and Subtraction.  We are beginning Chapter 6:  Subtraction Strategies

Writing: We are continuing to work on writing sentences in a story, capitalization and punctuation.  Work at home on these same skills by having your child write a complete thought each night, making sure they use a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, and punctuation at the end.  You will be amazed at how fast your child's ability to write a complete thought and expand on it will grow!  :) 

Science:  Magnet Unit 

BOOK ORDERS:

Thank you So much for taking time to order books for your child.  The book order has been sent and should be here either next week or the following.  Thank you for your support in the classroom, too.  We really love getting new books for our class library.  The children are so excited to have new books to read!  :)   

RED RIBBON WEEK:

We had a great Red Ribbon Week!  The children all enjoyed wearing their red ribbons each day.  They are coming home with your child today.  Continue to talk with your child about these important issues.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY:

Our school has decided to honor the memory of Dr. Karen Looft on October 27th, the national day of service.  We are encouraging anyone who would like to participate to do any service activity on that day and then to turn in a note about what you did.  The school will be making a memory book for the Looft family to show them what everyone did on that day.  If you would like to participate, please do so and then send us in a note on a piece of paper to include in the book. 

As a class, we wrote letters to the soldiers on Friday to send over seas.  The children did a wonderful job on these cards... you should be extra proud of your little ones... they had wonderful, thoughtful and caring things to say to our men and women serving our country.  Thank you for raising such wonderful, caring little ones.  We truly enjoy them!

The children did a great job this week in the cafeteria. The children used their TAME behavior in the cafeteria to earn the "Golden Tray Award" at the end of the week.  Congratulate them at home and help support the cafeteria staff on good lunchroom behavior.

WEEK 9 NEWSLETTER

ACADEMICS:

Language Arts: 5 Little Ducks

BOOK ORDERS:

Book orders are also coming home today.  Please return the book orders along with Checks or Money orders back to us by Monday, October 15, 2007.  Again, this is a great way to order reasonably priced books for your home library and also help our class earn classroom points to order more classroom books.  If you would like to participate, please make sure your orders are in by the end of the school day on Monday, October 15.  :)  Thank you so much for your time on this! 

SCHOOL DIRECTORIES:

School Directories are coming home today!  Make sure if you purchased a school directory, that you have one.  If you did not purchase one, and would like to buy one, please contact a PTA representative. They will be more than happy to help you in whatever way they can. 

RED RIBBON WEEK:

A note is coming home today about Red Ribbon Week!  Each day next week, there will be a theme for the day.  For each day your child participates, they will sign a sheet and turn it into the cafeteria for drawings for some great surprises.  :)

We have had another great week with our Yellow Jackets.  We have enjoyed all of their Characters that were brought in this week to hang in our hallway!  How excited they were to bring them in and show us their creations!  Thank you so much for taking the time to make some special memories for your first grader! 

The children also did a great job with both our County Wide Fire Drill and our Code Red Drill!  They were very quiet as they walked outside for the Fire Drill, and they were very calm about the Code Red Drill as well!  Thank you for your help at home preparing them for the drills, and helping make these practices successful!!!!  We really appreciate it!

WEEK 8 NEWSLETTER

WOW! Can you believe we are already to week 8?  This year is flying by... October is here, Fall has come, and we are in week 8!!!!  WOW!!!!  We hope you have a great end of the week and a wonderful weekend!!!!  Read the following information carefully!  Lots of fun is on its way!!!

ACADEMICS:
LANGUAGE ARTS: Flower Garden is our story for the week... We are studying nouns and verbs.
MATH:  Addition and Subtraction, Word Problems
WRITING: Continue to work on complete sentences, punctuation, capitals and publishing.  We want to encourage the children to start lengthening their stories... at least 5 sentences.
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE:  Weather and Maps

CogAT TESTING

We finished our CogAT testing last week.  Thank you for making sure your child was here on time and ready to take the test! We really appreciate it!  :)  Everyone has finished the test and they have been sent to the state to be graded. 

OCTOBERFEST:
This Saturday is the Octoberfest.  If you haven't purchased your bracelet, please send in your order/money.  At the festival, there will be two specials opportunities.  Please take a stroll by the amazing pumpkins that each classroom has decorated with the help of parents.  They will be up for auction and can be yours, if your heart desires.  Also there is a teacher outing auction.  We are up for purchase for an afternoon outing with one special child.  Feel free to spend money on us!!!  All proceeds will be given to the PTA for use in the school.

CODE RED DAY:  This is a drill that we will be practicing with the students in the next week.  It is safety drill in case of emergency.   The students will remain in their classrooms and the doors will be locked.   Please make sure that if you are in the building, that you have checked in at the front office.  This is to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, and visitors at school. 

HIGHLIGHTS:    There will be two more forms coming home from Highlights.  One is for a puzzle book and the other is for hidden shapes/pictures.  If you would like to order either, please send back the form back with your address.  If you do not, please sign and check no on the back of the forms.  The magazine sends us free classroom gifts for each returned form with a yes or no response.  Thanks for helping our classroom grow. 

OCTOBER HOMEWORK PROJECT:  We are sending home a note about a project for decorating a paper children's body.  It will come home on October 5th and the project is to be turned in by October 12th.  Thanks for helping your child with this project, we will be putting them up in the hall. 

I LOVE A BOOK DAY:  We will be sending home a note and a poster board on October 15th about I love a book day.  Please use the poster board that we provide for the recreation of your child's favorite book.  We will wear these on October 31st along with a costume of the child's favorite character from the book.  We will have a parade around the school on the 31st.  We will also need a parent volunteer on that day who would be willing to dress up in costume and read their favorite story to four different classes.  If you are willing to do this, please let us know ASAP. It is on a first come, first serve basis.
