A Message From Our Counselors

Dear Sope Creek Famiy.

We are holding our annual Holiday Bear gift card program and would like you to consider making a gift card donation to help our Sope Creek families during this holiday season. Bears with store and amount designations are posted on the main bulletin board in the school lobby.  Please consider helping by taking a bear and obtaining a gift card.  Gift cards can be returned to your child’s grade level counselor by December 15.  Your generosity will help to make this a brighter holiday for many of our children and their families.  Thank you in advance, and may each of you have a wonderful holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This week has been a great week! We have finished studying Susan B. Anthony and everyone did a great job on their test. Check out your Viper's binder to see the test. Also, check out the newspaper your Viper created. They did a good job jumping back in time to report on Susan B. Anthony. After Thanksgiving week, we will begin our study on Frederick Douglass. We started reading about him some this week, but after Thanksgiving, we will dive right in!

In Math, we will review division and then move onto a review of elapsed time and making change. If you see a Publix or Kroger flyer with prices, please send it in. We will be using them to practice making change.

In Language Arts, we are going to be reviewing all the different kinds of verbs we have been studying and then move onto subject/verb agreement.

On Thursday, we will be taking our trip to the Federal Reserve. Please send your child in their class t-shirt on Thursday.

I hope all of you have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving break. I am getting extra hugs today so I can make it through the week off!  

The LIFESKILL of Sense of Humor

Today we started talking about the LIFESKILL of sense of humor. We read a book and told some great jokes. We talked about having a sense of humor means "to laugh and be playful without hurting others". This is an important LIFESKILL to know. I told the Vipers this morning at Town Hall that they are more than welcome to bring in school appropriate jokes this week as well as the week after Thanksgiving. They will have an opportunity to share their jokes at Town Hall. They sure were making me laugh today! What a great way to start off the day!

Also, it looks like everyone will be here on Thursday of this week, so we are going to go ahead and have our ice cream party reward from Boosterthon. I will bring in ice cream, chocolate syrup and a few toppings. If you are interested in sending in any additional toppings, that would be great as well. We will eat lunch in the classroom and enjoy our ice cream afterwards! We are looking forward to celebrating before the break!

Division, Division, Division

We sure have been busy this week with division! We have learned many different ways to solve division problems and have also been challenged with word problems. We are now working on our fact fluency. We will continue to focus on our facts next week as well. Practice as much as you can on IXL!

We also focused on quotation marks this week and have become masters! Next week we will review common, proper, singular, plural and possessive nouns. We will then move onto action and linking verbs.

We will continue to work on Response to Literature. We have responded to literature in several different ways. Next week, we will be writing a letter to the main character in the story. The Vipers have really enjoyed giving their opinions to the author!

This week we also started learning about Susan B. Anthony. Our walls have become a timeline which has been so much fun. Today, we put information on the wall about Susan B. Anthony. We will continue to add to our timeline as we learn about the different famous Americans. This was so much fun! We also started work on our very own newspaper article! Each Viper has chosen an important event in Susan B. Anthony's life. They will each become a reporter and report on the information we have learned. Today we started writing it and next week we will begin to type it into the computer. The kids were really excited about this and want to do an article for all of the famous Americans. I love it when they get so excited!!

We will finish Susan B. Anthony next week and will begin talking about Fredrick Douglass. His life interwined with Anthony, so we will learn about him and then move onto Paul Revere.

The board games were a success!

Our board games were a BIG success today! All of the Vipers did a great job and put a lot of effort and creativity into it. Their games will come home today. I hope all of you get a chance to play them this weekend.

 

Next week we will also begin our study of division. Everyone did great on the multiplication test. Look for those coming home this weekend.

Also next week, we will finish up our study of soil and then move onto Susan B. Anthony. We got a sneak peak about her on Thursday when she came to visit! Please keep a look out for any current newspaper articles that show LIFESKILLS she used (effort, perseverance, courage, problem solving, responsibility and so many more). Also, if you see an article where someone didn't use these LIFESKILLS, we would like to see those as well. We will be using the articles to compare and contrast with Susan.

Next week, the Vipers will be doing the morning pledge and Lifelong Guidelines pledge. They are super excited!

A reminder that there is no school on Tuesday. We will be attending inservices during the day.

Thank you also to Ashlyn's aunt for coming into today. She showed us a beautiful slideshow of her hike all the way through the Appalachian Mountains. Many of the Vipers had connections with her and asked great questions. Thanks so much!!
