On behalf of the entire Sope Creek PTA, we wish to thank the many, many parent volunteers who gave their time and talent to make each of our enrichment and family fun events a huge success. We could not have done it without you.  We hope you have a happy summer!

It is hard to believe, but the PTA is already making plans for the new school year.  We need volunteers to help in several areas:

Monday, August 3rd (8:30am - 12:30pm) - Volunteers needed to stuff PTA Membership packets and to deliver school supply packets to the classrooms.  We will start at 8:30am, but volunteers are welcome any time.  Sign up sheets are posted on the PTA office door (2nd grade hallway) or you can contact Lisa McDougall, maclisa@comcast.net.

Thursday, August 6th (one hours shifts, any time between 11:30am and 4:00pm) - Volunteers are needed to help at Meet and Greet.  Please contact Sally Wright, szwright@bellsouth.net, if you are able to help.

Friday, August 7th - Volunteers are needed to help at the Teacher Back to School Luncheon.  Help is needed any time between 10:30am and 1:00pm.  Volunteers are also needed to donate drinks and/or desserts for the luncheon.  Again, sign up sheets are posted on the PTA office door, or you can contact Lisa McDougall, maclisa@comcast.net.

What a wonderful job the Bees did on their animal presentations!!! We all learned some interesting new facts about their animals. The Bees also had fun creating art like Andy Warhol using the animal they chose to report on. They are hanging up in the hall and they will bring them home next week.

If you haven't sent in a bag yet, please do so by Tuesday. Thank you. We also could use some clorox wipes for our desks.

Turn in your Health and Nutrition Fruit and Veggie Consumption sheet on Monday!  We hope you had fun tracking all the colorful foods your child consumed during the week.

Papa John Pizza Night Tuesday – The Sope Creek Foundation’s last pizza night of the year is Tuesday.  Feed your family and earn money for the Foundation.  Let Papa John know you are from Sope Creek and turn in your receipt on Wednesday to the Sope Creek Foundation.

 

This year's Awards Days are slightly different from the dates posted on the PTA Calendar.  If your child is going to receive be recognized on Awards Day, you will receive an invitation from their teacher. To check on Awards Day Dates and Times: http://sopecreeklibrary.typepad.com/blogs/

 

If you are a parent of a 4th grader, you know that Pioneer Day is Monday, May 11th.  Volunteers are still needed for full (8:30am - 2:10pm) and half day (8:30am - 11:30am or 11:45am - 2:10pm) shifts.  If you are not able to volunteer your time, food donations (specifics to follow at a later date) for the "Hospitality Room"  are also needed.  If you are able to help in either way, please contact Sarajane Fletcher, sjfletcher@hotmail.com. 

 

2nd Grade Georgia Day is Friday May 15th and volunteers are still needed.  This is a new curriculum enrichment program and we are excited to present all the wonderful history and unique aspects of Georgia to our 2nd Graders.  Please contact Tracy Pickens (tonksy@gmail.com) if you can volunteer.  It will be a great learning opportunity for all involved.

Busy Bee News

The Bees had a wonderful time on Career Day. They loved hearing about all the wonderful jobs. our parents do each day. I want to give a special thanks to Mr.Cook for taking time out from his busy day to share his careers with us.

Yesterday we had our radish party. We were able to go out and pick them in between the raindrops. Our friends from Seeds of Nutrition, Seth and Nicole were there to help us wash them, cut them, and make our radish sandwiches. We are looking forward to harvesting our sugar snap peas next.It was a terrific activity while we were studying plants.

Our last author we are reading is Eric Carle. We have learned about how he does his art work for his books and we are all giving it a try. We are making animal habits  with beautiful papers we have painted.

Don't forget to send in a larg paper grocery bag so your Bee can bring home their school supplies.

Field Day tomorrow. Don't forget to wear your Busy Bee shirt.

CRCT Testing begins on TUESDAY!!! Please make sure your student is rested, on time, and has a healthy breakfast!  More information can be found on the Sope Creek blog.

The week of April 20 - 24 is "Turn off the TV" week.  This will be a great opportunity for families to turn off their TV's, computers and video games and spend some quality time playing board games, taking a walk or just talking.

Friday, April 24th is the last TGIF of the year.  Please bring your family and friends to the Chuck E. Cheese on Roswell Road from 3:00pm - 9:00pm for some fun while FUNraising.  This is a great way to support our school.

Friday, April 24th is Spirit Day.

We had our in-school field trip on animals. The presentation was called Wildlife Wonders. It was terrrific. The children loved it. We will begin our study of animals when we get back from Spring Break.

Tuesday April 14th is Papa John's Pizza Night. When placing your order don't forget to mention Sope Creek.

A Lunch and Learn featuring Jeff Dess will be held Thursday, April 16th from 11:30-12:30 in the Media Center.

We want to thank everyone for making Art Day so much fun!!! We had a great time doing an art project like artist Rachel Perry Welty. Everyone is bringing home a sample of what we did with aluminum foil. Ask your Bee about our sayings.

Monday, March 23rd - The PTA Health and Nutrition Committee is hosting a Lunch and Learn from 11am - 12pm in the Media Center.  The topic is "Litterless Lunches".  Please come to learn how to create lunches that are nutritious, delicious and eco-friendly. Tuesday, March 24th - Box Tops due.  This is a fun and easy way to raise money for Sope Creek...one dime at a time!

Wednesday, March 25th - Birthday Book Club will be held at 7:20am in the Media Center.

Quack, quack the ducks are back!  Mark your calendars.  The Kids Care Club will once again be selling those cute rubber ducks.  They will be available for purchase on Tuesday, March 31st at 7:20am for grades K through 2, and Wednesday, April 1st at 7:20am for grades 3 through 5.

First Grade would like to give a big thank you to Seeds of Nutrition for helping us GROW!
We are GROWING in our knowledge of how a seed becomes food, and the different parts of the plant
We are also GROWING delicious peas and radishes in our garden that we will harvest than cook in April.
Come check out our garden beds... as we continue to learn the standards through gardening!

Busy Bee Buzz

Science- We had a great time planting our radishes and snap peas in the first grade beds outside. Come by and watch our plants grow!! We also have been growing some plants in class to watch how a seed opens up. The Bees will be bringing those home soon.

Next Thursday report cards will be coming home. If you have any question, don't hesitate to contact me.

FRIDAY, 3.20.09 IS ART DAY – GOGHING GREEN!  One of the most creative days of the year!  Extra hands are always needed!  Please contact Bonnie Fishman if you would care to volunteer or if you can drop of a food item for all the guests who will be educating and entertaining our students.

Also make sure your students wear the appropriate color to school for Friday’s student performance art picture:

***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ART SHOW SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY EVENING AT 6PM HAS BEEN CANCELLED – We hope you had a chance to see your child’s art hanging in the school during the Fun Run.  *** Please do not take your child's work down during Fun Run. We will send it home at a later date.

We want to thank the students and parents here at Sope Creek.  Our Clean Air Campaign has paid off, and now we all can breathe easier.  The percentage of idling cars has greatly decreased since the first count that was made in October.  In October 55.2% of the cars waiting for student pick-up were idling as they waited.  Last week the percentage of idling cars in the car pool line was 11.2%.  What a difference!  Please continue to keep the air around our school clean.  Thanks!

Tuesday, March 10th - Kindergarten and new first grader registration packets are available for pick up in the front office.  Please inform your neighbors and friends who have children ready to start Sope Creek next year!

 

Tuesday, March 10th is Pizza Night.  Be sure to tell Papa John's when you call in the order that it is for Sope Creek Pizza Night.  Also, please remember to send the sticker from the box (with the dollar amount you spent) in to school the next day.  We need the sticker in order to make sure Sope Creek gets the appropriate credit for the sale.

 

Wednesday, March 11th - Friday, March 13th the PTA is sponsoring a Sope Creek Clinic Drive.  Needed supplies range from ginger ale and round peppermint candies to tissues and clothes.  Please see the clinic link located on the Sope Creek blog for a complete list.

 

ART DISPLAY FOR FUN RUN – Wednesday, March 11th from 10am - 12pm, volunteers will be hanging our children's artwork for display during Fun Run.  If you are available to help, please stop by the Art Class and Daphne Hopkins will give you instructions.  If you are not available on the 11th, but have other free time this week, please see Daphne or contact Susan Laug, susanlaug@msn.com.   We need to have all the art work hung by March 13th.

 

The Foundation needs volunteers to help stuff race bags for the Fun Run.  Please stop by the Sope Creek gym on Sunday, March 8th any time between 12pm and 4pm if you are available to help.  Pizza and water will be served.  Please contact Tamara Karrh, tdkarrh@bellsouth.net for more information. 

 

Class baskets will be on display in the Media Center during the week of March 9th - 13th.  They will be auctioned off at the Fun Run on Saturday, March 14th.

        When the storybook comes home, please be sure to read it with your Bee.   We get a comprehension test on these stories every week.   We have our Math Fact quizzes on Thursday not Friday.  Thanks for all your help.

            The Fifth Grade had their Famous American's Day  today. The Bees loved watching them march through the hall. We all got to see some of the historical figures we have been studying. They did a fabulous job.
