WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MUSIC WITH MRS. TOWLE?
Fifth and Fourth grade students are studying instruments that belong to the Percussion Family. Students are learning about this family of instruments through song, movement and instrumental play. The Essential Question for this study is "How do I classify Percussion instruments?"
Third grade students are learning to play the wind instrument, the recorder. The Essential Question for this unit of study is "How do I play a melody on the recorder?"
Second grade students are learning about repetition and contrast in music (refrain and verse). The Essential Question for this study is "How can sections of music differ?" Students are having fun learning while singing and playing instruments to the song "Best Friends".
In music class students are playing a game to learn about rhythmic notation. The Essential Question for the game activity is "How do I know the value of music notes and rests?" Students are having fun learning while playing the rhythm game "Toss-a-Cube".
In March, all third grade music students will begin the study of the wind instrument, the recorder. Students will learn the fundamentals of music notation while having fun playing the recorder. Students need to bring recorders to school for music class the week of March 24th. The Essential Question for this unit of study will be "How do I play a melody on the recorder?"
The week of February 11th - 15th is "Abilities Awareness Week". In Mrs. Towle's class students are learning about famous musicians who have overcome obstacles to achieve outstanding success in music. Students are listening to the inspiring music of Ludwig Van Beethoven (deaf); Ray Charles (blind); Mel Tillis (speech challenged); and Itzhak Perlman (physically challenged). Students are learning that obstacles can be overcome by having CREATIVE thinking, a positive ATTITUDE, PERSISTENCE and SUPPORT (CAPS).
The third grade will be performing the musical review FREEDOM on Thursday evening, February 7th at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. The musical review is a celebration of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Parents and students are welcome.
In music class 5th and 4th grade students are exploring the Essential Question “How does a melody alone compare and contrast to the same melody when it is started at 3 different times?" Students are learning to play a melody in a three-part round on the barred Orff instruments to change the texture of sound (harmony).
The Elementary District Honor Chorus will be performing on November 15th at 7:00 pm at Piedmont Baptist Church in Marietta. The 400 member choir includes select students from elementary schools in Cobb County and Marietta City. The director will be Mr. Craig Hurley, Director of the Spivey Hall Young Artists. In music class 2nd - 5th grade students are exploring the Essential Question: "How do I describe the lines and spaces of the treble staff?" Students are learning about written music through singing, moving, playing instruments and learning games.
