Problem Solving
The children solved two interesting logic matrix puzzles and one perplexor. Many of our students are able to solve this type of intellectual challenge independently. We are so pleased with our first graders' progress.
Unit Work
Today students discussed the meaning of the word "successful" and brainstormed a list of attributes that successful people possess. Teachers then read the book Oh, the Places You Will Go to their classes. We explored topics such as:
* the importance of making good personal decisions and not going along with the crowd
*the realization that sometimes we will make mistakes and not to let these errors cripple us.
*the meaning of the sentence, "Life is a great balancing act."
The children wrote their short-term and long-term goals and shared them with the class. We then played a lively board game based on Oh, the Places You Will Go. The children truly loved this activity. Students took a vocabulary quiz and did a crossword puzzle that focused on the ideas covered in this book.
After specials, the children made a t-shirt of a place they would like to go. Some classes had time to research the locations the students selected and shared these facts with one another.
Third graders learned their last lesson in Hands-On-Equations for this year. They finally got to use the white pawns (ask them about it). Second graders worked on Number Corners. All students worked on a grid perplexer about colors and races, and some students had time to use their imaginations to transform clouds into unusual and varied objects.
Students shared their news stories on Amelia Earhart. They learned about the parts of an airplane while building a plane on the avkids website. They then completed a diagram and crossword puzzle on airplane parts.
We reviewed the forces involved in flight and completed a study guide in preparation for the unit test next week. Students should review the guide for homework.
Next week will be our last Target class for the year. Our time with our second graders will be cut short next week because of their visit with the Australian Bakery. We are asking our second graders to make at least 1 paper airplane at home to bring to school next week. They were given sheets with instructions. Third graders will make theirs in class.
Due to Field Day on Wednesday 5/7, we will not meet with our Wednesday classes.
We know the students will enjoy the exciting day!
Friday's class will meet as usual with Mrs. Bullard. Students will explore the Dr.Seuss classic The Cat in the Hat. Due to a previous Friday holiday, students were unable to experience this classic tale from the lessons the week of Feb. 4th.
We are watching our year rapidly come to an end, and only have two more sessions with our first grade students after this week. Once again, we thank you for sharing your delightful children with us.
This is our big dissection week for fifth graders. We will work on some review activities and then we'll get the "real inside scoop" on the real insides of the shark! We will also present our movies to our classmates. Next week will be our last Target class with our fifth graders and we will do some closing activites and celebrate with a party. Please remember to bring a treat to share next week with your classmates. Be sure to bring spoons, etc. if they are required for enjoying your treat.
Fourth graders will have their shark dissection test this week. We will finish up our PowerPoint presentations and plan to share those next week after our dissection. A letter will go home entailing what you need to bring for dissection.
