Frequently Asked Questions

It is hot, will we be going outside?

We will try to go outside as much as possible. This is why it is
imperative that you are drinking lots of water AT HOME as well as during the
school day.

It is cold, will we be going outside?

We will try to go outside as much as possible. If the temperature is 40
degrees or warmer, we will most likely be going outside. Always be prepared
with a jacket or sweater.

Are these shoes OK?

Please see the "policies" page regarding dress code. The shoes must be made
for
VIGOROUS activity.

May I go to the bathroom?

If it is an emergency, we will let you go during class. However, it is a
disruption to the rest of class. P.E. is only 40 minutes, you need to be in
class! Please try to go BEFORE you come to P.E.

Does my class have PE today?

It is your responsibility to know when your class has P.E. If you are not
sure, ask your teacher. Most classrooms have a calendar posted in class that
shows when you have each specials class. Remember that grades 2-5 always have
P.E. for 2 days in a row, and then other specials for 2 days, then P.E. for 2
days, etc. If we have a holiday or field trip, check with your teacher.
Kindergarten and 1st grade have P.E. on the same days each week.

My leg hurts, can I sit out?

You need a note. If your injury is something that happens during the day that
you have P.E., we will let you sit out, but you must bring a note the next
day.

My mom says that I can play with this cast on my arm, so can I?

If you have had a long term injury, it is best for someone to write a note
and let the P.E. teachers know when you are cleared to return to class. This
is especially important if there are only certain things/activities that you
are cleared for.

P.E. Challenges/Awards

Fitness Assessment: The components of this year's fitness assessment are: Curls (abdominal strength/endurance), *Push-Ups (upper body strength), **Mile Run (cardiovascular fitness), ***Sit & Reach (flexibility). The link below has all of the standards for "B" (boys) and "G" (girls) grades 2-5.

*- Elbows must come to a right angle for each push-up to count.

**- 2nd and 3rd will run the 1/2 mile.

***- Start with both feet flat against a wall. How far can you reach while keeping your legs straight?

Creek Challenge: 4th and 5th grade students will have a chance to earn the "Cross the Creek" or "Jump the Creek" award to be presented at the end of this school year. Students must meet the standards in all 5 components to be eligible for an award. The standards are the same for 4th and 5th graders. The components include "Goals" (tests ability to control a soccer ball with your feet), "Ropes" (how many jumps can you do in one minute), "Wall-Catch" (how many times can you throw and catch a tennis ball off of the wall from a given distance in 30 seconds), "Cones" (measures agility), "Lay-Ups" (how many basketball lay-ups can you do in 30 seconds starting from behind the foul line each time)

Big Red

What Is Your Big Red Score?!?!

*Big Red is our 1/8 mile dotted red line track on the black top. As the weather warms up, we will give the students a chance to see how many laps they can do around Big Red without stopping to walk. Clearly we will need to cut some students off while they are still running to allow us time for our day's lesson. The number of laps they complete, is their Big Red Score. The emphasis is on endurance, NOT speed.

Dress Code, Grades, and Illness/Injury

Dress Code:

-You must wear athletic shoes to P.E.

**Must cover entire foot

**Must fit snug

**Must have rubber sole

**Must be made for vigorous activity

-If you choose to wear a dress or skirt, you must wear shorts underneath.

-If you do not meet this dress code, you will have to sit out and work on an alternative assignment given by the P.E. teachers. If you have to sit out more than two times, it will be reflected in your conduct grade.

Grades:

-All students in grades 1-5 will receive two P.E. grades on their report card. One of the grades is based on their skill level and the other will be based on their conduct. The possible grades are O-outstanding, S-satisfactory, N-needs improvement

Illness or Injury:

-If you are not able to participate in P.E. on a certain day, you need to bring a signed note from home. On these days you will also need to sit out during recess.

-When returning from an injury, you must bring a note that releases you to participate.

Program Goal

It is the goal of the Physical Education Department to provide Sope Creek students with skills and conditioning necessary for participation in activities conducive to a healthy body and strong, active mind.

Schedule

Grades 2-5 are on a rotating schedule. Each student has P.E. for 2 days in a row and then something else (art, tech, music) for 2 days in a row. Then they are back to P.E. for 2 days in a row. This means that there will be some weeks that students will only have P.E. 2 days. It is essential that every student is getting exercise outside of school to go with what they get in P.E.

Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade always have P.E. 2 days each week. Their P.E. days are always the same.
