Week 21

Dear Parents and Learning Lions,

    It is very hard to think that we are way past the half year mark of second grade.  When we get to the 100th day, it reminds us that we have only about 80 days left to go.  We certainly need to make sure to be getting ready and acting like the third grade students that we are about to be.  Today, Friday, was a very excting day with our celebration of the 100th day.  We each visited five centers of different activities all will 100 as the theme.  It took all five groups, but we were very happy to put together our new 100 piece floor puzzle.  This rain forest looks beautiful.  Thank you, parents, for sending in the snack.  I appreciate that your child had counted these at home.  Together, it was a very tasty treat. 

    The Learning Lions have had a great week working on math concepts.  I have been quite pleased with everyone's ability to add three digit numbers.  The problem that may occur while adding is the fact that the children may not know their addition facts well.  This is something they should practice every day if they don't know them quickly.  Thanks for helping your child.  You may want to make flashcards.

Academics for next week:

*Reading--We are again reading non-fiction books---In small groups, we will be reading books that go with our Space Science Unit.

*Writing--We will find information about penguins that we will be writing about.  We will use books and the internet.  If you have a book about a certain penguin please share with us.

*Math--Three-digit subtraction will be the concept that we will be working on this week.  Thank you for supporting your child at home by helping them know the facts.

*Science--Bodies in the sky---(Moon, Sun, Stars)

*In Spelling we are reviewing the long vowel patterns.

*Book Report is due Friday!

    More independent work is expected from second graders at this time of the year.  Active listening is very important.  Practice good listening skills at home.

Week 20

Dear Learning Lions and Parents,

    Finally, next week, we will be looking forward to a whole (5) day week!  It will really be nice to be back in a regular schedule.  This past week we read a very cute book about a little girl who was able to talk to animals.  It was fun seeing the different things that she did with her four-legged friends.  Speaking of reading, I'm so proud of three girls that received extra credit in reading.  They each wrote summaries of the book that they were given for Christmas.  Way to ge Cate, Lauren, and Avery.  You certainly show Initiative, Responsibility, and Effort.  

    Next Friday is the 100th day of school.  We will do a few activities that go along with this special day.  Your child needs to bring in 100 food items that we can mix together to have a special shared treat on Friday.  Remember to make them healthy choices.  Your child must make sure that there are 100 pieces.  This will not seem like much of some, but 100 from each child is what we want.  Counting is part of the task.

    Your child got a non-fiction book that he or she will be doing a book report on.  They will be reading for information in this book.  The book report paper will come home on Monday. 

     Please make sure that you send in the permission sheet and donation, if you choose, next week for our trip to the Tellus Museum.  We can go only if we collect enough money to pay admission and for the bus.  Thank you to 7 Lions who have already done that.  

Academics:

Math---3-digit addtion  (Continue to proctice the basic facts with your child.  This is what boggs them down when adding large numbers.)

Reading---Non-Fiction books--(Small group reading times---some will be reading as a Literature Circle group.)

Writing---Informational Writing

Extra (Week 19)

Parents,

    Please sign the report card, place it in the envelope, and return on Monday.  No Behavior Sheet came home this week so there will be none to sign.  Remember to write your child in the Friday Letter book.  Chick - fil - a night is Tuesday, January 17.  Enjoy your family's evening meal there.                           Carole

Week 19

  Dear Parents and Lively Learning Lions,

        We are very happy to be back at school.  The children all seemed to have a great break.  We are all ready to buckle down and begin getting ready to become third graders.  There will be more expectations of the children.  You will see more homework, and please help your own child to develop greater independence during this last half of second grade.  Jobs and tasks to complete at home are good in the growth of your child.  Thank you!!

        These first four days back have been quite full of learning.  Fractions have been the concept that we have worked on in math.  The children have learned about fractions of a a whole.  Quiz them and find out!  We have been reading Fables and learning the lessons that they teach.  All children wrote a paragraph about what they did over the break.  We have learned about one of our Georgia Heroes (Martin Luther King Jr.)  We are writing a paragraph of information about him.  They all know why we are having a holiday on Monday.  Remember no school on Jan. 16.

  This is the book that each children received from me before the holiday as a gift.  I told the children early this week that if they read it and brought in a summary of the book, I would give them 'extra credit' in reading.  I'll be looking for those summaries to come in next week.  I want them turned in by Friday.  It is really a cute book that is quite easy to read.

Dear Students and Parents,

The first ever Sope Creek Family Movie Night is coming on January 20, 2012.  It is being sponsored by the Student Council.  We will be showing The Smurfs and National Treasure 2.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase, but you can BYOC (Bring Your Own Candy).  We will be expecting that you bring your parents because this is a family event – no drop offs, please.  So mark your calendar – January 20 7:00-9:00 in the cafeteria and the media center.  Optional donation for Must Ministries gladly accepted.

Week 18

Dear Parents and Learning Lions,

        We are all looking forward to the upcoming holidays.  I truly love this time of year.  We are really in school for a long time this year, and I realize that the children are getting very excited about the coming fun times that they are about to have.  We still have some important things to cover and tests to take.  We also have many fun things going on, as well.  This is a schedule of a few things for the next four days.

*Monday--- We take the benchmark in math.  This covers what has been taught this second nine week period.  Cate's Mom will be the parent sub for two hours in the class while we, as second grade teachers, plan for the upcoming quarters.

*Tuesday---We take the benchmark in language arts.  On this day everyone should wear fun holiday attire.  I will year a crazy sweater.

*Wednesday--- We look forward to the holiday party.  (9:30-10:30)

*Thursday---Please wear your Lively Learning Lion t-shirt.  We will have a spelling test.  These words will be given out on Monday, and we will practice them daily at school.

******There will be NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK!!!

Week 17

Dear Parents and Learning Lions,

   We had a pretty exciting week, and our next week will be interesting also.  This will be short and quick to read.  Please know that the children will be taking two county tests during the week.  These will be given on Monday and Wednesday early in the morning.  Please make sure that you children are on time these days.  We will also be working on other subjects and getting to the end on the 9 week period.  Projects and tests will be completed in several subjects during these next two weeks.

Week 16

Dear Parents and Learning Lions,

    We will be having very busy weeks for the next 3.  Thank you for always having your child on time and ready to learn.  Most children are very excites during this time of yeqr.  Please remind them that school rules and our TAME behavior should always apply.  If you and your parents read this please bring a note with a smiley face on Monday, and you will get a homework pass.

     Academics:

***Reading and Language Arts---Poetry--(Relationsips of characters, homonyms, rhymes, proper nouns, adjectives, commas)

***Math---We are working with time this week.  Practice at home!!  Must know time to the 5 mintutes.  Please use an analog clock.

***Science---Pushes and pulls

Please always remember to read and work on ixl each day.  I check this and can tell the children who are reading at home.

Tuesday we will be going to the Nutcracker.  This is our performing arts event!  Please dress in nice clothes as we will be going to the theater.

Transportation: School bus

We will see a creative interpretation of the classic Nutcracker Suite at the Cobb Civic Center located at the intersection of Marietta and Fairground streets. Please dress up for this grand trip to the theatre! We will have to walk across the parking lot so be sure to dress warmly!

This promises to be a wonderful experience for everyone! 

*We will eat a sack lunch before we go to the event. Your student may purchase a sack lunch from the school cafeteria or bring a lunch from home.

We are holding our annual Holiday Bear gift card program and would like you to consider making a gift card donation to help our Sope Creek families during this holiday season. Bears with store and amount designations are posted on the main bulletin board in the school lobby.  Please consider helping by taking a bear and obtaining a gift card.  Gift cards can be returned to your child’s grade level counselor by December 15.  Your generosity will help to make this a brighter holiday for many of our children and their families.  Thank you in advance, and may each of you have a wonderful holiday.
