During the Fun Run, each classroom will be auctioning off a basket. Our class theme is "Books Galore and More". Please read the attached letter from our Foundation Friend to find out how you can help our class!

Important Info from Mrs. Lamberth!
Valentine’s Day is Thursday! Don’t forget to let your child make/decorate his or her shoebox in anticipation for this kindhearted day! Shoebox creations may be brought to school on Wednesday.
Spelling Homework Change-
Beginning on Monday, February 11th, we are going to spice up our spelling! Each child will have a spelling journal that will be used for their spelling homework throughout the week. We will also keep their spelling tests in this journal to use as a reference. Your child will have choices for their spelling homework on Monday and Tuesday night of each week. On Wednesday, his or her homework will be to complete the Sitton Spelling Worksheet and to study for Thursday’s quiz. I feel that the spelling journal will be a wonderful resource for the children to use during the school day, and it will give each child a little more ownership of their work. J All of the choices will be glued inside the spelling journal for your child’s convenience. Have fun with spelling!
Mr. Popper’s Penguins-
Our classroom will begin reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins the last week in February. Please send in a copy of this wonderful book by February 25th. Here’s an idea…if you will be unable to purchase the book, search for it at your public library. We should only need it for about 8 school days.
Field Trips!
On Wednesday, two permission slips will be sent home for a couple of upcoming field trips. We will be visiting the Chattahoochee Nature Center in March for our life cycles unit, and the Chattahoochee Nature Center will be bringing a star lab to our school on Feb. 21st. It is necessary for us to prepay for these experiences… so we are asking that you send in the $$ by THIS FRIDAY (2/15/08).
Moon Phases –
In science, one of the many goals for a second grader is to observe the moon for an extended period of time and understand that the moon has phases. (It is not necessary for a second grader to know the names of the phases.) We will begin “Moon Watching” on Monday. Your child’s job will be to find the moon each night and draw a picture of what they see. It would be great if the phase was labeled…but it isn’t required. Enjoy the observations and conversations you and your child will have! J

Calling all parents and friends of Sope Creek!! Our annual career day is scheduled for March 4th from 8:30-11:30am. Please consider being a part of this exciting day by volunteering be a speaker. Speakers do not have to be here the entire day and will be given an exact schedule. No career is too big or little! Week of January 28th
Hello Locomotive Families!
Wow! Thank you to all of the parents who attended the Winter Conferences! Our class had 100% participation! I know your child will truly benefit if we are all working together. :)
This week we will continue geometry in math. In reader leader groups we will be reading more nonfiction stories to prepare for our upcoming astronomy unit. During writers workshop we will practice writing descriptive stories on a wish that we want to come true. Spelling will continue to focus on prefixes and suffixes and we will complete a short unit on GERMS during health!
News and Reminders :
Dr. Burstein will be visiting the second grade on Monday, January 28th to discuss dental health. He will be showing our kids pictures of teeth that have been taken care of, and teeth that have not been taken care of. He will stress the importance good hygiene.
READING LOGS ARE DUE ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 31. DON'T FORGET TO WRITE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF MINUTES!
ART DAY: Wear the color shirt that is assigned to your grade on Art Day, 2/1/08. MAKE SURE TO BRING YOUR SHIRT IN BY WEDNESDAY, 1/30 and have it ready at school. Grade shirt color assignments are as follows:

FUN RUN: Mark you calendars! Don’t forget the Fun Run, Saturday, 3/15/08 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.
Feb. 4-8 is National School Counseling Week. This is a week designated by the American School Counselors Association to recognize counselors for the outstanding work they do to support our students, families, and school communities.
Please take time during the week of Feb. 4-8 to celebrate the enthusiasm and commitment of the school counselors in your buildings.
