Week of 4/14/08

Welcome back from Spring Break Locomotives!  I hope you all enjoyed your time off!

What's Happening in our Class?

This week in math, we will be reviewing many topics learned earlier in the school year. Adding and subtracting money, time, making change, measurement, fractions, and geometry.  Next week we will continue review rotations and will discuss place value and problem solving.

During writer's workshop, we will begin writing poems.  Our first poem is inspired from "The Important Book".  We will be writing why reference materials are important.  (Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia)  We will also review similes/metaphors, and will practice writing descriptive poems to describe a butterfly.

In reader leader groups this week, we will be reading Aesop's Fables.  Our focus will be on the moral of each story.

After lunch, we will be using our afternoon time to review math, reading, and language arts skills for the CRCT next week.  We will complete a few practice activities each day and will check our answers as a class.

Don't Forget:

April 23-25 - CRCT testing for 2nd grade (PLEASE BE ON TIME AND MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD GETS A HEALTHY BREAKFAST AND PLENTY OF SLEEP)

April 25 - Last day to check out books

May 7 - Field Day

May 9 - All library books are due - (I will take AR scores at this time)

May 14 - Mark your calendars for our 2nd semester performance.  We will be presenting the play "Bunny Rabid" from 9:00-9:30.  (Scripts will be handed out after the CRCT)

Week of March 24th!

Can you believe it’s the final week of March?  Time flies when you are having fun!

Here is what’s happening in our classroom:

We have been reviewing making change the past week.  It is a difficult concept, so keep practicing at home!  Our next math unit is on multiplication.  We will learn many strategies for using multiplication.  Your child will be able to make an array, use a multiplication table and repeated addition.

During the fourth nine weeks our writing focus will be on responding to literature. We will be reading many beloved Tomie dePoalo books, and will be integrating many of those books for our writing responses.

We are already on unit 26 of spelling!  This week we have many words with the /tion/ sound.  In our lessons, we will continue to review prefixes and suffixes, homophones and compound words.  I am very proud of the progress our class is making on the analogy and sentence quizzes.  It’s always great to see growth!  J

Mrs. Dressel, Mrs. Crowder, Mrs. Smith, and I had so much fun rotating classes this past week to teach animal life cycles.  Your child will be bringing home their Life Cycle Journal soon to show you all of the cool information he or she learned.  Our next animal will be a BUTTERFLY!

The seed experiments are going well! (Except nothing is growing! J)  Hopefully this will be a fun way for your child to really learn why a plant needs water, sunlight, soil, and air to survive!

Dates to Remember:

March 25th – FIELD TRIP TO THE CHATTAHOOCHEE NATURE CENTER!

Please wear your class T-shirt!

April 7th – April 11th – SPRING BREAK!

Reminders:

All spring pictures and signature cards that went home with your child's report card are due ASAP! - THANKS!

March 17th News

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Allen for putting together our class basket!  It looked fabulous for the auction on Saturday!  Also...congratulations to all of the Locomotive runners.  Way to go!

This week in class...

Math - We will be finishing measurement and will review making change!  Next week we will begin our unit on MULTIPLICATION!

Reading - In our Reader Leader Communities, we will be reading non-fiction texts about plants and animals.  These stories go along with our life cycle unit perfectly!

Writing - Tomie dePaola is a great author and illustrator.  We will use some of his books this week for persuasive writing ideas.

Spelling/Language Arts - This week we will be reviewing suffixes!  -s, -es, -ed, -ing

Science - What a fun week this is for science!  Our class will be taught by a different teacher each afternoon.  Each teacher will present the life cycle of a different animal.

Reminders...

It's time to start practicing for the CRCT!  We have been practicing in class, but I just wanted to remind you to use the computer practice at home as well!  All of the information for the on-line practice was given to each parent during the January conferences.

Report cards go home on Thursday!  Please look over and return the card/envelope on Friday.

Next week we will be going to the Chattahoochee Nature Center to learn even more about Life Cycles!  :)
