BABY GIRL JOLLANDS HAS ARRIVED - MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2007 - FINNLY LANE JOLLANDS

As you already know, Lisa Coburn and I will be finishing the year with your children.  There are only 7 weeks left this year.  The rules, procedures, and expectations will not change for your children.

The week of April 16 will be the CRCT.  Please read aloud to your children every night.  Please chat with your children every night. These are the same great parenting skills you used before your children ever entered school, and they are still the skills your children need from you even though they may know how to read to themselves.

March 04, 2007

                                                               March 5-9, 2007

The JACKALOPES have 16 students and 2 teachers on roll now.  It's a tall order to teach to each student's strengths and weaknesses.  We very much need your at-home assistance.  We have a few suggestions that we hope will help you at home with your child's academic success.

*REMOVE electronic gaming devices and TVs from your child's bedroom.  These items need to be limited to weekend viewing.  The internet gaming sites are becoming very dangerous places for predators anyway.  These devices should be in a public place in your home.  Please read page 4 of the March 2007 issue of The Creek Chronicle for more responsible uses of these devices.

* READ every night to your child, even if it's just for 15 minutes. Your child needs to see/hear you do what s/he is expected to do at school.  Did you know that Friday, March 2, 2007 was the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss? ?  What a great author to read with your child each night!!

* SIT down for dinner together.  Help model table manners.  Have casual conversations with your child and other family members sitting around the table.

* Give your child CHORES.  Doing simple tasks around your home will help your child feel like an important part of the family.  Pick your battles carefully.  Your child may not do it as you would, but perfection is not the object here.  Family interaction is the object.

* PLAY with your child.  With the game devices and TVs limited to the weekend, you will have them so BORED.  Go outside together.  Play hopscotch, kick-the-can, I-spy with the clouds.  Help your child play board games, money games with your loose change, make up stories together, play dot-to-dot games, tic-tac-toe games, I-spy games with newspapers/magazines to find letters, words, or numbers studied in class.

* Read page 7 of the March, 2007 issue of The Creek Chronicle.  The article, GET MOVING, gives some excellent ideas for you and your child to do together.  These ideas will help your child in our class.

* Read page 8 of the same Chronicle, Invisible Disabilities.  The listed examples and descriptions are many of our children.  These disabilities, plus others, are just some of the reasons we need your help in the after-school hours to continue your child's learning.

* CRCT dates are April 16 - 25.  "To get students to think for themselves as they read, [we] have to stop thinking for them." (Maren Aukerman in the October 2006 issue of the EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP professional magazine.  Please help us help your child by practicing this technique at home.

* Give clear/simple ORAL DIRECTIONS to your child.  Repeat one time.  Have your child those directions back to you and then do them as you have directed.  Our students need to practice their listening skills.  When you repeatedly tell your child to do something at home, your child expects us to do that at school.  We do not have time to continually repeat directions.  Good listening skills will transfer over into good reading and comprehension skills.

NOW, FOR OUR WEEK AHEAD!

MATH - money, money, money (1-2 grades), and multiplication (3rd grade).  Practice these skills nightly with your child.

LANGUAGE ARTS - Reading/Writing/Spelling skills will, as always, be used in across-the-curriculum activities.  PARENTS, please practice at home.  If you watch a 30-minute show together, have your child write a summary of the show.  Have your child tell you how the ending could have been different and why.  Watch a news story together and ask a few comprehension questions orally.

SOCIAL STUDIES - 2nd grade - Jamestown - talk with your child about what a fort is, how Jamestown can be compared to our community today, and the importance of Jamestown to our country's history.  These are discussions we will have in class, as well.

HEALTH - 3rd grade - Preventing Disease - review terms and noninfectious diseases with your child.

SPECIALS - check your child's individual homeroom teacher's schedule for these activities.

CRCT - use those packets I sent home last Monday with your "captive audience."

Feb 26 - Mar 2 News

The Jackalopes have had another busy week of learning.

Third grade had 2 fieldtrips.  We definitely want to hear all about them.  Be prepared to write or speak about your experiences to the Cobb Civic Center and the Capitol. :-)

Second grade began work on their informational piece on Astronomy.  Your children have already taken home the order forms/envelopes for the Class Books that will contain these writings.

First grade has the American Symbols displayed in the hall for you to see.  The students have worked very hard on this Social Studies lesson.

Now, for our week ahead, hold onto your hat. :-)

MATH
- money, money, money - PARENTS, please practice at home.  You have so many real-life opportunities at your disposal to help your children learn this life-long skill.  3rd grade is also learning multiplication (short-cut addition).  Have your children show you what they are learning.  Math will be with them forever.

LANGUAGE ARTS - Reading/Writing/Spelling skills will, as always, be used in across-the-curriculum materials.  PARENTS, please practice at home.  Give your child something to read, silently or aloud, then ask a few comprehension questions.  Have your child write a letter to a relative or a friend.  Have your child read and write something every day; after all, practice makes perfect. :-)

SOCIAL STUDIES - 2nd grade - Jamestown - did you know this year is Jamestown's 400th birthday?  This unit will include many across-the-curriculum activities.  PARENTS, ask your children about this historically important community.
                               - 3rd grade - Health - Preventing Disease - WOW, what a timely topic for discussion at home, with all the colds and flus going around!  We will include activities of non-infectious deseases, like asthma.  Our metro area is one of the highest ranking areas in the nation for asthma.

SPECIALS - check your child's individual homeroom teacher's schedule for these.

CRCT
- watch your child's folders for information that you can use to reinforce skills that will be tested.  We have been learning and practicing so very much this year.  When you feel there isn't enough time for everything during the week, remember the weekend.  You can have "captive audience" time with your child. :-) Playing/cooking/cleaning/shopping/chatting all provide relaxing opportunities for you and your child to be together. Have fun!
