We had a wonderful 100th day of school today filled with LOTS for 100 day activities!  Ask your child all about them!  I sure enjoyed hearing what they think $100 can buy!  Thank you for helping with the 100 day snack... they LOVED it!

EXCITING NEWS:  First Grade will perform for the next PTA meeting on February 2nd @ 7 pm.  They will be singing songs to celebrate Black History Month.  Please make sure you child is on stage in the cafe ready @ 6:55 pm. next Thursday night.  Please have your child wear jeans and a solid colored shirt.

We will begin learning about Theodore Roosevelt, who loved nature and was instrumental in starting National Parks.  Be looking for Flat Teddy to send to an out of state friend or relative so that we can learn about National Parks all around the United States!

In math, we have begun learning about TIME!  To reinforce at home,  have your child check the clock regularly and let you know what time it is.  (Not with a digital clock! : ))  The students have starting "scrolling"... this is writing their numbers 100 at a time and adding it to their scrolls!  They LOVE it and it becomes kind of a "contest" to see who is the farthest!  Mia is almost at 1,000!  Ask your child where they are.

It is hard to believe but the 100th day of school is on Friday!  On Friday, we will have a fun 100th Day Rotations through different classes doing lots of things that have to do with 100!  Each child will also put together a 100 day snack... please bring in your item tomorrow.  Thank you in advance... this is always a favorite activity on this day.

Thursday is always Library Day... please make sure your child has their library books at school on this day so that they can get new books.  The students were also shown a great way to search and think about what  books they would like on Destiny... our library search.  On this site, they read about what they are about, find the reading levels of books they are interested in, and hold books so that they can check them out the next time they are in the library.  Ask your child to show you how! 

Six Flags Reading to Succeed was sent home yesterday.  This is a great way to earn a FREE Six Flags ticket!  Keep recording your books and minutes read on the sheet.  Once your child reaches 360 minutes sign and  bring it back in to me.  (You can use the books for homework on this sheet too!  Record the books and minutes on both!)  This is a great program and the kids enjoy getting a FREE ticket!  Reading log sheets are due to me on Feb. 28th.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  I hope everyone had a great, relaxing break... I know I did!  It was great to see everyone today and catch up on what we did over our break and get back into our classroom routines.

In math we are reviewing and practicing comparing numbers.  (greater than, less than, equal) We are also going to be starting Minute Math...which are timed tests to see if you know your math facts.   In writing, we are writing our New Year's goals.  In social studies we will be focusing on continents and oceans in our world.  In reading, we are continuing our focus on main idea, details, and summarizing the books we read. 

The first ever Sope Creek Family Movie Night is coming on January 20, 2012.  It is being sponsored by the Student Council.  We will be showing The Smurfs and National Treasure 2.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase, but you can BYOC (Bring Your Own Candy).  We will be expecting that you bring your parents because this is a family event – no drop offs, please.  So mark your calendar – January 20 7:00-9:00 in the cafeteria and the media center.  Optional donation for Must Ministries gladly accepted.

**  Please send in any empty paper towel rolls you have.  We need those to help us with number sense when we start scrolling!
