We had a wonderful 100th day of school today filled with LOTS for 100 day activities!  Ask your child all about them!  I sure enjoyed hearing what they think $100 can buy!  Thank you for helping with the 100 day snack... they LOVED it!

EXCITING NEWS:  First Grade will perform for the next PTA meeting on February 2nd @ 7 pm.  They will be singing songs to celebrate Black History Month.  Please make sure you child is on stage in the cafe ready @ 6:55 pm. next Thursday night.  Please have your child wear jeans and a solid colored shirt.

We will begin learning about Theodore Roosevelt, who loved nature and was instrumental in starting National Parks.  Be looking for Flat Teddy to send to an out of state friend or relative so that we can learn about National Parks all around the United States!

In math, we have begun learning about TIME!  To reinforce at home,  have your child check the clock regularly and let you know what time it is.  (Not with a digital clock! : ))  The students have starting "scrolling"... this is writing their numbers 100 at a time and adding it to their scrolls!  They LOVE it and it becomes kind of a "contest" to see who is the farthest!  Mia is almost at 1,000!  Ask your child where they are.

It is hard to believe but the 100th day of school is on Friday!  On Friday, we will have a fun 100th Day Rotations through different classes doing lots of things that have to do with 100!  Each child will also put together a 100 day snack... please bring in your item tomorrow.  Thank you in advance... this is always a favorite activity on this day.

Thursday is always Library Day... please make sure your child has their library books at school on this day so that they can get new books.  The students were also shown a great way to search and think about what  books they would like on Destiny... our library search.  On this site, they read about what they are about, find the reading levels of books they are interested in, and hold books so that they can check them out the next time they are in the library.  Ask your child to show you how! 

Six Flags Reading to Succeed was sent home yesterday.  This is a great way to earn a FREE Six Flags ticket!  Keep recording your books and minutes read on the sheet.  Once your child reaches 360 minutes sign and  bring it back in to me.  (You can use the books for homework on this sheet too!  Record the books and minutes on both!)  This is a great program and the kids enjoy getting a FREE ticket!  Reading log sheets are due to me on Feb. 28th.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  I hope everyone had a great, relaxing break... I know I did!  It was great to see everyone today and catch up on what we did over our break and get back into our classroom routines.

In math we are reviewing and practicing comparing numbers.  (greater than, less than, equal) We are also going to be starting Minute Math...which are timed tests to see if you know your math facts.   In writing, we are writing our New Year's goals.  In social studies we will be focusing on continents and oceans in our world.  In reading, we are continuing our focus on main idea, details, and summarizing the books we read. 

The first ever Sope Creek Family Movie Night is coming on January 20, 2012.  It is being sponsored by the Student Council.  We will be showing The Smurfs and National Treasure 2.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase, but you can BYOC (Bring Your Own Candy).  We will be expecting that you bring your parents because this is a family event – no drop offs, please.  So mark your calendar – January 20 7:00-9:00 in the cafeteria and the media center.  Optional donation for Must Ministries gladly accepted.

**  Please send in any empty paper towel rolls you have.  We need those to help us with number sense when we start scrolling!

The Polar Express Day was a lot of FUN... with lots of activities!  Thank you for everyone that made this day a success... the kids had a great time! 

As the holidays approach please keep reminding your child to have great behavior... elves (or whatever character you use) are even at school watching them! : )  We still have things to learn before the end of the quarter along with the fun! 

 

We have received first grade CogAT scores.  The vendor does not distribute individual score reports for students/parents.  If you would like a copy of your child's scores, please contact the teacher.

Holidays are here and in full swing!  In the next couple of weeks we will be doing lots of exciting projects and things happening at the Creek.  I'm sure your child has told you that we have elves in our hallways watching them!

This Friday is "Polar Express Day!"  Have your child wear his PJ's to school and be prepared for a fun day! (Please bring tennis shoes for specials on this day.)

In math we have finished our money unit...but reviewing this concept frequently would help your child.  Money is a very hard concept for first graders to grasp... especially when we start adding different coins together.  We will start learning about flat and 3-D shapes this week. (IXL is a great tool for reviewing!)

In reading we are working on the main idea of a story.  After your child reads to you at night, ASK them questions about what they have read and what the story was about.

Library Day is always Thursday!  Please make sure your child is prepared to return and get new books!

Our Holiday Party will be on Thursday, December 22nd.  Our room parents are working hard to make sure we have a great time! 

Thank you for bringing in paper sacks with handles!!  If you ever have any at your house you would like to get rid of... send them in. : )

Woo Hoo... the long awaited Thanksgiving Break is here!  This has been a long stretch of our school year and we have been so busy learning so many things!  It is really hard to believe we have already been in school for 68 days!  I wish you all a relaxing, joyful and safe break!

I have seen a lot of people working hard on the Math IXL program! : )  It shows in the students' math skills!  Each week I get a report that lets me know the minutes and types of problems that each child does. The averge in the the class is 40 minutes... AWESOME!  We even have some students with more than that! 

The students have been working hard on Raz-Kids Reading too!  Some students have even gone up to the next level!  This break you can use both Raz-Kids and Math IXL to keep your student sharp!

Large paper sacks with handles needed.  During the holidays, we make lots of things that need to be brought home and large paper sacks with handles work great!  Please send in one or more. Thank you!

Please be aware there is a new Cobb County Attendance Policy this year.  It focuses on UNEXCUSED absences.  Quick Guide:

• 3 days unexcused- teacher makes contact with parent.
• 5 days unexcused- In-Touch auto call and school administrative letter to parent.
• 7 days unexcused- In-Touch auto call and school administrative letter to parent and social worker referral.
• 10 consecutive days unexcused- administrative letter to parent.

**If your student is absent, please make sure you send in a note when they return or they will be marked unexcused.

Thank you all for coming to Parent Conferences last week.  I enjoyed talking with you and sharing how much your child has learned this year already!  We had 100 % parent participation and everyone was on time... WOW that says a lot about our wonderful class!  Thank you!!

I Love a Book Day was a huge success!  The kids looked great in their costumes and sandwich boards!  Thank you to Kelli Evertsen for being our "class reader."  Kelli dressed up and read to our visiting classes!

High Touch High Tech is coming to our classroom for an in-school field trip on Friday.  We will be experimenting and learning about sound... which is our next science unit.  Thank you to our wonderful PTA is sponsoring this in- school field trip.  Please have your child wear their "Harrie's Hippo" t-shirt on Friday.

SICK OF HALLOWEEN CANDY YET?  Please send in all your leftovers so that we can donate it to our troops and send them a sweet treat!  We will be collecting wrapped candy to send our troops on Thursday and Friday. 

Thanksgiving Food Drive starts on Monday.  Please donate can goods and/or boxed items to help others in need this holiday season.  They are also collecting change to purchase gift cards for needy families. 

HOMEWORK will be sent home on Fridays from now on to let the students have more time.  I hope that this gives you some extra time "flex" time to get it finished.  Homework is still due on Fridays.

It is hard to believe that it is the 49th day of school and we are starting our 2nd 9 weeks!  The students have learned so much already!  Our first unit in science this quarter will be learning about magnets.  In math we will be studying number patterns and place value.  In language arts we will continue to create stories, READ, and focus on nouns and verbs. 

Next week is Conference Week and the students will start dismissal at 12:20 all week.  I look forward to talking with each of you to share how much growth your child has made!  Since we are on a tight schedule, please be on time... thank you! 

Next week is also Red Ribbon Week.  Below is the schedule.  Show your school spirit!

Red Ribbon week coincides with Conference Week.  The daily themes are as follows:

• Monday, 10/24:  Team jersey Day
• Tuesday:  10/25:  Be a JEANOUS and wear jeans.
• Wednesday, 10/26:    Wear red clothes
• Thursday, 10/27:  Smarties for smarties.  Make smart decisions and wear your ribbon.
• Friday, 10/28:  Hat Day. 


 I LOVE A BOOK DAY is on October 31st.  Have your story board and costume ready for the parade!  The parade through the halls of Sope Creek will begin at 8 am Monday morning.  Please allow adequate time to park and find your place along the hallway to watch!

Please join us for our monthly Chick-fil-A Spirit Night on Tuesday, 10/18, any time between 5pm and 8pm!

While we dine and socialize, we will also be working on writing letters to service men and women as a part of The Bert Show's Big Thank You!  We will have paper and pencils available, and you will leave the letters with us.  We will make sure the letters get delivered.  More information on The Big Thank You, click here. 

Our goal is to have Sope Creek submit at least 1,100 letters!!!  If you would like to write letters at home, you are welcome to have your child bring them to the front office before October 26th.  They must be hand-written on 8.5 x 11'' paper and contain no political messages.

Thank you for supporting our school (a percentage of all proceeds help to fund field trips and staff development) and for supporting our troops!

 

Tomorrow night we will be writing letters to service men and women to submit to The Bert Show's Big Help.  We will collect the letters on Wednesday, 10/26 for delivery.  Please encourage your students to write letters at home, too. Our goal is to submit at least 1100 letters!!!  Guidelines for the letters:

• Heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. 
• The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. 
• We reserve the right to eliminate those messages that are political in nature and do not reflect a positive message in the spirit of Thanksgiving.  Those letters will be destroyed.
• All letters must be on 8.5” x 11” paper or smaller.  Do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper.  Decorate using crayons, pencil, etc. 
• Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only.  Do not send cards or photographs. 
• Feel free to include your mailing and email address, and you may get a response.  Individual letters should not be sealed in envelopes.

This was a very fun and exciting week!  We had a visit from Benjamin Franklin and enjoyed creating and making our own inventions!  I love this activity to see who really enjoys using their creativity and who is motivated to make and show what they did!  They couldn't wait to bring them home to show YOU!

This week was the final week of the first quarter.  We have been busy finishing up units and taking quizes to see what they have learned.  I can't wait to share their successess with you at conference time!  I'm sure you've probably heard of iRespond... the program and remote controls we use in class.  The class and I are learning how to do this... we are getting better at it... but Mrs. Harrie has a lot more gray hair! J
