Read to Succeed forms should be in your Grizzly's binder.  If the students read for 15 minutes each day, they will have no problem meeting the requirement to earn their 6 Flags Ticket.  You can transfer any entries from our regular reading log (dates from  1/27-present) to this one. No need to write on both logs.  Just complete this one if you plan on participating.  The due date is on both sheets.  If you run out of room, you may continue on the back.

Here is what we did today:

Math:

• measured with millimeters and centimeters
• converted between millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers

Language Arts:

• identified the subject and  linking verb  in a sentence
• created our title page and dedication page for our reports
• practiced fluency
• edited sentences

Work Stations:  Students work on completing a variety of skills throughout the week such as:

• creating a glossary for their report
• publishing their research
• building sentences with pronouns and linking verbs that have subject/verb agreement
• finding the supporting details for a given main idea in a short reading passage
• book club work (this includes a variety of reading strategies and vocab. based on a book

Science:

• introduced to the needs of animals
• viewed a movie about how animals adapt to survive

Homework today: 

•  math 15.4 complete all
• IXL  10 minutes

Moving into February

Our Grizzlies are working very hard on their reports and accomplished a lot today.  Here's what happened today:

Math: 

• Selecting the best unit to measure with (inches, feet, yards and miles)
• converting from one unit to another (inches to feet...)
• We will be having a test on Friday over measurement

Language Arts:

• We visited the computer lab to begin publishing our reports.  When we realized nobody was scheduled after us, we took advantage of the extra time we had to publish our reports.

Unit Work:

• named traits of plants
• We read and discussed adaptations plants have made to survive.

Please remember to continue reading for 15-20 minutes daily, spending 10 minutes on IXL (measurement would be a good focus) and work on the practice CRCT tests. 

 

 

 

 

 

Georgia is on our Mind!!

        Well, it looks like we are going to make it through January this year without a snow day!  I'm not sure if I'm hearing cheers or not. 

**I wanted to give a big thanks to Ben's mom for coming to read to us on Friday. 

**If you haven't returned the report card envelop and signature card, please send that back.  Also, the writing notebooks need to be returned.

Georgia Reports:  (Language Arts and Science)

As you know 3rd grade students have been researching facts about the regions of Georgia.  The students have been given two opportunities to work on the computers to gather their information.  They have also had time during centers to research.  This project is to be completed in class, however research can be done at home and brought to class along with a list of resources used.

My hope is that all students will have the data needed by Wednesday.  This week we will begin organizing our data.  We will write topic sentences for each paragraph and back them up with the data collected.  This really isn't meant to be super detailed.  I would like each student to have 3 general facts about their region.  This may include the climate, location, size, terrain, landforms...  The second paragraph will include information about three different animals found in the region.  They should have at least 3 facts and be able to tell why the animal is suited for that region.  (ex. It has a long beak for spearing fish.)  The third paragraph will include three facts on each of three plants from that region.  Again, we would like to read why the plant is suited for that region. 

Please help your child finish gathering their facts.  Our wonderful Media Specialist has made it easy by bookmarking pages that will be of help.  You may reach this page from the library blog.  Your child knows how to get there.

Math:

The class is finishing up our area and perimeter unit.  They were doing well until we puth them together.  Some are confusing the two.  We will spend one more day on this before our chapter test on Tuesday.  Then we will begin measuring length to the nearest 1/4 inch.  (We've been measuring to the nearest inch up till now.)

Welcome Back

It is so nice having all of our Grizzlies back together again.  We are getting back into the swing of things.  I do hope everyone had a restful and fun-filled break.

Tonight's Homework needs to be adjusted a bit.  The students do not need to estimate in mm.  They should just measure in cm.  Thank you Schoenthaler family for bringing that to my attention.

Progress Reports will be coming home tomorrow (1/13).  Please keep the report and sign both the first and second line of the signature card.  Do not remove it, but return the envelope with the signature card attached.  (If you remember, I forgot to have you sign that you received the 1st 9-week progress report.)

To keep the envelope mentioned above from becoming over-stuffed, I went ahead and sent home some very important papers.  There should be:

1. directions for completing an on-line survey
2. records of financial transactions for taxes
3. directions for logging onto CRCT practice testing site
4. information about an incentive program for CRCT practice


Please remember to have your child complete their reading log each day.  Also don't forget to sign the behavior sheet each week.  These papers should remain in the binder at all times.

2. practicing multiplication facts  (Our goal is 90 out of 100 correct in 5 minutes.)


Language Arts:

Fluency is one area that has been preventing our Grizzlies from moving up in reading levels.  You can help by having your child read aloud to a family member.  Not only is it good practice but it will help them feel more comfortable when they have to read aloud for assessments.  We began a new program this week that will help with this.  Ask your child about it.

We visited the Media Center to begin a research project on a region of Georgia.  Your child has chosen a region to study and will be creating a book filled with information.  Although the research and writing will be completed in class, your child may choose to find information outside of school.  Just have them jot down some notes and bring them to class.  They will also need to record the source of the information for their bibliography.

Looking for Volunteers:  I would love to have a volunteer or two to:

1. tear out and organize pages from our sort book
2. cut out some laminating
3. and this is a weird one but... if anyone has a drill bit that drills into concrete, I would love to hang a shelf above our coat rack.  I will purchase the materials, I just don't have the bit.
