Can it really be December?

Wow, this grading period is really flying by quickly.  I hope everyone had a great week off and is back into the swing of things.

First thing you need to know is that I will be out for the next three days.   I had planned a trip for this Friday - Monday and then learned that I'm to attend a planning in-service on Thursday.  So, I have decided to not give homework in addition to Reading, IXL and Spelling City for the rest of the week.  (I'm sure you're bummed about that.)

Here is what you can expect:

Math:

• Continue division
• chapter 12 test Thursday
• IXL focus should be on division

Language Arts:

• capitals, punctuation, quotation marks
• vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, homophones, context clues)
• research skills
• main idea, supporting details
• making connections
• author's purpose
• asking questions
• making predictions
• comparing characters
• spelling (contractions) 
  • sort 13 this week
  • sort 14 next week

Unit of Study:

• Frederick Douglas (check the social studies folder in the binder.  There are study sheets.)
• test on Friday

Friday's Guest Reader is Jacob's Mom.

We have our field trip next Tuesday.  Please have your Grizzly in their class shirt.

We are holding our annual Holiday Bear gift card program and would like you to consider making a gift card donation to help our Sope Creek families during this holiday season. November 1418

Thanks for sending in all the treats for Halloween.  The class enjoyed all the goodies.  Thank you to Natalie's mom for sharing some great books as our Guest Reader.  Thank you to all those that donated can goods to our canned food drive. 

Kudos to the all of the Grizzlies for working on their mulitplication facts.  We zipped through four chapters over the past two weeks.  The class looked at strategies and concepts of mulitplication.  Tuesday we will take our mulitplication test on chapter 10.  Then we will begin exploring the concept of division.  Please continue memorizing multiplication and division facts. 

In Language Arts we finished identifying and writing the four types of sentences.  The students wrote summaries and  book blurbs for stories they read.  We also discovered different strategies to learn new words we find in text.  This week we will continue retelling and summarizing stories, after identifying the story's elements.  We will examine the ways prefixes and sufixes change the meaning of root words.  Wewill also identify anonyms, synonyms and homonyms. 

We completed our study of Susan B. Anthony and will begin reading about Paul Revere. 

Tuesday is our school Thanksgiving Feast.  This is for students only and they are encouraged to dress up a little for this special event.
