Week of 1/28/08

Breaking_news DON'T FORGET:  Monday, January 28th is early release.  Dismissal is at 12:20 p.m.  Please make the appropriate arrangements.

Also, Friday, February 1st is ART DAY!  This year the theme is Performance Art.  This is an entire day of art and fun activities.  We will eat sack lunches in the classroom.  Third grade will need to wear black shirts on this day.  If you would like to bring the black shirt in, please do so by Thursday.

Meeting It was very nice to have a chance to visit with all of the Greyhound parents during conference week.  Your Greyhounds are truly amazing!

Math We will have our Chapter 18 test on Tuesday of this week.

We will begin our measurement chapter number 15.  This chapter covers measurement to the nearest 1/2 and 1/4 inch in foot, inch, yard, and mile.  Also, we will compare the customary units of measurement.  We will also learn the metric measurements.

Reading

We begin a new story in a new book.  Diamond Cove is the second have of the year for our classroom reading.  Our story this week is Borreguita and the Coyote.  This is a fiction story as we begin to learn about the balance of nature.   We will learn about vocabulary, summarizing literature, adjectives that ell how many, context clues, and our spelling pattern.

Week of 1/22/08

Milk

The Health and Nutrition Committee is sponsoring "3-a-Day Month", by the National Dairy Association.  Students are encouraged to milk, cheese, or yogurt three times a day to insure adequate calcium intake.

During the week of Jan 22 - 25, students can produce their own 3-a-day Superfan online.  Have your child print the superfan they create, and they will all be collected to create one large superfan.  During the week of Jan 28 - Feb 1, children drinking plain milk, skim milk, or yogurt may be given prizes by the 'Got Milk' promotion.

Dismissal

Please remember that we do not have school on Monday January 21, 2008.  The rest of the week ,we have early release for our conferences. We will eat lunch earlier and go to specials at a different time because of our early dismissal time.

Meeting

The Book fair is in the Media Center, so plan to look around before or after our conference.

Reading

Due to early release and a short schedule this week, we will not have any spelling words or story.  We will resume our regular schedule Tuesday, January 28th!

MathWe will begin a new Chapter this week. Chapter 18 Perimeter and Area. Here is the homework for the week:

  Tuesday:  Lesson 18.1 and Lesson 18.2 or RW 92 and RW93.  Perimeter and Use a Formula-- l+w+l+w=perimeter.  Perimeter is the measurement outside of a figure--around the figure.

                      Wednesday:  Lesson 18.3 and Lesson 18.4 orRW94 and RW95--Area and Find Area.  l x w= area.

                      Thursday:  Lesson 18.5 P or RW 96--Problem Solving.

   1/22-1/28--Early Release Week @ 12:20 p.m.  Please make the appropriate arrangements and let the teacher know how you will be going home all week.

1/22-1/28--Scholastic Book Fair.  Please be sure to visit the book fair.

Bring in yarn, ribbon, beads, etc. for your ART PROJECT.  We will begin this on Wednesday!  This will count for 1/2 of their art grade this quarter.

We collected $25.40 for the Penny Wars.  Thank you Greyhounds for participating in this great cause for the American Cancer Society.

WEEK OF 1/14/08

Happy New Year once again.  Thank you parents for adhering to the schedule for conference.  I'm booked solid back to back each and everyday! I looked forward to meeting with you and distributing the report cards. Your children have been working hard and it shows on their report cards.

We had a wonderful Science Day.  It served as a great review of the Science materials and standards that have been covered thus far.  Thanks to all the parents who helped with this big task.  We appreciate you and all your efforts!

Breaking_news

I'm now able to collect your Scholastic Book Club orders by check.  If you wish to not order online, you can return your order form along with a check payable to Scholastic Book Clubs.  Remember, no tax is added to your purchases.

Also, we have a new page added to the homework sheet.  It is a vocabulary map.  Your child will need to pick two vocabulary words each week and print out two vocabulary maps and follow the directions on the map.  Remember, it is not the pattern words for the week, but rather the actual vocabulary words for that week. This page will actually take the place of Thursday's homework in spelling.

A letter will go home on Monday regarding CRCT practice online.  This is a wonderful website that gives the children actual practice tests. Please read it carefully!

Smartboard We have been using our Smartboard ever since we came back from the winter break.  Boy, are we learning and having fun with it.  Thanks once again to the Ellis family and to every family in our classroom that donated money toward this wonderful teaching tool!

Math

We will begin our new Chapter in Math.  Chapter 17 discusses Solid Figures. We will discuss and learn what are faces, edges, and vertices in solid figures.  We will combine figures, draw figures, and identify relationships between figures. As you look through your child's math book, you will see the Georgia State Standards in blue at the top of each and every page.  These are our new State Standards that ALL teachers teach by.  Ask your child about the Essential Questions or EQ.

The Cube Projects were fantastic.  I have them displayed outside our classroom.  I have received many compliments from parents and teachers on what a wonderful idea and project.

Germ

In Health, we are learning about germs, diseases, infectious and noninfectious diseases, and about staying healthy.  We continue to work from Chapter 5--Preventing Diseases.  We have used the smartboard to show videos about germs.  The children are really enjoying learning about staying healthy.  We will take our Health Test on Chapter 5 on Friday of this week.  Review and study your guides and handouts.

The Sope Creek Relay for Life Team is holding a competition between grades to see who can collect the most pennies.  Please send in any donation of extra pennies you have around the house.  They really do add up.  The money will be donated to the American Cancer Society.  Thanks for your help.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! WEEK OF 1/08/08

Happy New Year to all!

Don't forget that the Home Reading Log is due on Tuesday.  Also due on Tuesday is the Cube Tissue Box Project.  Your child will need to present it to the class. Make a list of all AR books read during the break and be ready to take AR tests on your computer day.

Reading:  We will finish our Theme 2 with a wonderful story called The Three Little Javelinas.  This story is very similar to The Three Little Pigs.

We will look at story element, vocabulary, using adjectives, sequence in a story, and homophones!  We will use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the two stories. Here are the spelling words for the week: The pattern this week is homophones.

Health:  We will begin to study Chapter 5 in our Health Book.  As cold and flu season begins, we will discuss how to prevent the spread of diseases. We will also look at nutrition.  Look for study guides to go home.
