Week of 10/29/07

The Greyhounds have been very busy this week learning about arrays and the properties of multiplication.  We have made our own multiplication word problems using arrays and made Jack-o-Lanterns and haunted houses using the properties of multiplication. 

We also went on our fabulous field trip.  Make sure to check out the pictures, too! 

We are also trying very hard to win more Golden Tray Awards by using our T.A.M.E. behavior in the cafeteria!

Reading Reading:  We will read My Name is Maria Isabel.  We will work on grammar--plural possessive nouns.  Our concepts this week will be story elements, drawing conclusions, and the author's purpose.  Our spelling words will concentrate on o sounds---ah sound.

Math

We will begin taking timed test this week on multiplication facts 0-5.  Please study and practice those packets that went home several weeks ago.  We are playing multiplication games, working in groups, and taking timed test to really learn these facts.

Health:  We continue to study the affects of Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco on the body.

We are watching videos and role playing how to say no to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.  Look for a study guide to go home this week on Chapter 7.

Make sure that the health book and story book come home this week.

WEEK OF 10/22/07

Breaking_news Thursday, October 25th is our class field trip to New Echota and Etowah Mounds.  Please have your child wear their class t-shirt.  It will be cool that day and our field trip will be outdoors for most of the day.  Please wear a long sleeve shirt and then your class t-shirt over it.  You will also need to bring your snacks. If you want to bring a hat, that will be just fine with me. I am also allowing the children to bring their electronic devices. The bus will be locked during our visit of the grounds.  However, your child will be responsible for their electronic devices.  I cannot be held accountable if they are lost or missplaced.

Grehounds2  Last week our class won the golden tray award.  This award is given to classes with perfect behavior in the cafeteria.  Our class has set a goal to win these every week.  We are working very hard to achieve that goal.  Congrats!

Reading

The story this week will be Lester's Dog.  Grammar skills will cover singular possesive nouns.  Spelling words will focus on the /oo/ sounds. We will also focus on words that make sounds called Onomatopoeia.  Here are the spelling words for the week:

Reading_4

This week we will be reading Storm in the Night by Pat Cummings.  This story tells of a boy who is staying with his grandfather during a storm.  The grandfather spends the time telling the boy of how he himself used to be scared of thunderstorms and how he managed to overcome his fear.
  Grammar skills will cover more plural nouns, similes, and continued work on drawing conclusions. Our spelling words will focus on sh, ch, and wh sounds.

WEEK OF 10/8/07

Thanks to the Greyhound Parents for their donations of Germ X, Lysol Spray, and Lysol Wipes.  We have been cleaning the classroom frequently in hopes that we stay healthy!  Thanks again for the wonderful contributions.  We cannot do it without you.

This week we will begin reading Brave Irene by William Steig.  This story tells of Irene, who must brave a blizzard in order to deliver the duchess’s newly made gown.  This story starts our new reading theme of Discovering Courage.
  Grammatically we will cover singular and plural nouns.  The class will also continue working with recognizing context clues in order to determine a word’s meaning.
