WEEK OF 10/1/07

Reading_2

READING:  We will read from our supplemental library.  We will have literacy circles on non-fiction books this week.

There will not be any spelling words this week or language arts homework due to the ITBS.

Math MATH:  We will finish chapter 3 in math.  Continue to practice subtraction facts at home.  We will have another subtraction fact timed test this week.  There will not be any homework in math this week due to ITBS.

Recess

  Parents:  Please do not send your child to school in flip-flops.  If your child does come to school in flip-flops, they will not be allowed to play during recess.  Sneakers are best for playing outdoors.

School_lunch

Please return your school lunch and fundraiser surveys.

October 6th- Octoberfest at the school from 2-6p.m.Thanks to Ellie's mom for creating our class pumpkin.

Don't forget to bid on our class pumpkin.  The pumpkins will be in the media center before Octoberfest.  On Saturday October 6th the pumpkins will be in the cafeteria.  Come bid on our great Greyhound Class Pumpkin.

Science:  The Greyhounds continue to investigate and study rocks and minerals.  They are busy finishing graphic organizers on the rocks and minerals.  Look for study guides to go home soon.

This week in Reading we will again have no story, but we will have guided reading groups.  We will work on writing, particularly on responding to literature. We will also take a skills tests in grammar.  Here are the spelling words for this week:

Science:  The students will begin their three week rotation with Mrs. Lance.  They will explore rocks and minerals.  Look for graphic organizers to go home and for a Study Guide to be sent home on the last week of the rotation.

Lysol Wipes/Clorox Wipes Needed!

Parents:  We have had many students in our classroom sick with stomach virus/flu, fever and flu like symptoms.  We would love to have everyone stay healthy.  Here is where you can help.  When out shopping, please try and donate a tub of Clorox or Lysol Sanitizing Wipes.  We use these on a weekly basis to clean our desktops, computer keyboards, doorknobs, etc.  We are trying to get rid of those nasty virus. Any help with this is greatly appreciated! Sick

WEEK OF 9/17/07

What a great week we had!  Again the Greyhounds completed their homework assignments for the week. They really did a great job!  We are becoming more responsible!  Way to go Greyhounds!

Reading Reading this week: We have officially ended our first theme in Reading, Creativity at Work.  We will be taking a skills test covering the four kinds of sentences, subjects and predicates, and common and proper nouns.

Math:  We will begin Chapter 3- Addition. We will learn about the properties of addition--communative, identity, and associative.  We made a flip book on Friday covering this to prepare us for this coming week. We will also add 3 and 4 digit numbers and use the guess and check strategy to solve word problems.  We will learn front-end estimation as well!  Look for the first subtraction timed test this week!  Practice, practice, practice at home!! Week of 9/10/07

Thank you parents for helping your child get their homework in order for Friday.  We had a very successful Friday!  All homework was turned in!  I am so proud of my class!  It shows that the Greyhounds are working hard, and that Greyhound parents ROCK!!

Reading

This week we will begin reading the biography Jerry Pinkney: Achiever of Dreams by Ilene Cooper in our reading book.  This story tells how Jerry Pinkney achieved his dream of becoming a prominent artist and illustrator of numerous children’s books.

  We will review subjects and predicates as well as introduce common and proper nouns.  Spelling words for the week will focus on long a and long e.  The students will also continue working with prefixes and suffixes.

Math

MATH:  We will finish Chapter 2 in math!  The whole chapter dealt with comparing, ordering, and estimating numbers.  We have discussed numbers to the nearest ten, hundreds, and thousands!  We will also take a Unit Test this week and possibly one last addition timed test!

Here is the homework for the week:

Monday:  Odd Number Problems on Page 35.  Also, I will distribute a Chapter 2 Pretest for review.  This is due back on Friday with all the homework!

Tuesday:  Page 37.  Do all the problems on this page.

Wednesday: I will give the Chapter 2 Test on Wednesday! Study, study, study! Homework for tonight Page 38 and 39..there are only 9 problems. 

Thursday:   Reteach Workbook will be handed out on Thursday.  We will use this workbook for homework.  Do page RW11 and RW12 for homework.  The page should be torn out of the book!  The workbook can remain home, but the homework should be turned in of course on Friday!

Social Studies:  Your child continues to work in Mr. Dunn's class and learn all about the Creek Indians and Cherokee Indians! They are working from the Georgia book all about their lifestyle and culture. Look for study guides to come home this week.

9/19- EARLY RELEASE @ 12:20- PLEASE MAKE APPROPRIATE ARRANGEMENTS.

9/26- 9/27- The cognitive abilities test will be administered.  This test measures student performance on abilities related to success in school subjects.  In addition, the results of this test will be used for gifted eligibility.

10/1- 10/5- The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills will be administered. The ITBS is a nationally normed test that measures student achievement in reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies. 

All tests are multiple-choice tests and will provide both the school and parents with important information about specific strengths and weaknesses of students in the content areas tested. 

We will begin testing promptly at 8:00 a.m.  Look for more information on this in the Creek Chronicle!

The Greyhounds will read Appelemando's Dream from the textbook.  Skills with this story include discerning reality from fantasy, subjects and predicates, avoiding double negatives, and spelling words with long i and long o.  REMEMBER TO DOWNLOAD THE HOMEWORK SHEET FOR SPELLING.  LOOK UNDER PAGES, THEN CLICK ON THE LINK.  LASTLY, PRINT IT OUT AND LET YOUR CHILD BEGIN USING IT!

We will discuss their way of life, jobs, food sources, and family life.  We will have a test over the first part of the material on Friday.The most important part is that they know they have a test Friday. LOOK FOR A STUDY GUIDE TO COME HOME THIS WEEK!
