Reading Logs

As you know we ask that the children read a minimum of 400 minutes per month and that they write these minutes down on their Reading Logs.  The third grade teachers and I have noticed a trend where either the logs are not being turned in at the end of the month or that the students have not met the 400 minute requirement.  I had eight students fit one of the above descriptions today.  We cannot stress how important it is that your child continue reading independently at home.  By reading at home your child is guaranteed to experience continued growth in their reading levels.  In a typical month it's only 13 - 15 minutes a day!  This is one of the reasons that I do not give excessive amounts of homework during the week (so that they can read).

What I've decided to start doing is spot checking the reading logs during the week.  If by Friday a student has not met their minutes goal then I will keep them in on Friday for Study Hall so they can read independently.  I am looking for around 60 minutes for each Monday through Thursday period.  Please help your child keep up with these!  As such I will discuss with the class the need to keep their Reading Logs in their binders.

Thank you so much for your help!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow - the students' behavior has been wonderful these past few days before the break!  Normally they would be hanging off of the ceiling by now.

FYI, the newsletter that I sent home last Friday covers the week we return.  The spelling words are for next week, so please hag on to the newsletter!

Have a great week!

SmartBoards

From the Foundation:

2nd and 3rd Grade Foundation Friends and Teachers,
Thanks to all of you who have supported the SmartKids Campaign through your e-mails to classmates and your gifts. 2nd and 3rd grade have closely matched each other throughout the campaign and they are neck and neck now, all but tied for the highest participation of any grade;  in fact, it changes each day!
The third grade has had 24% of our families participate.  All of us at Sope Creek would like to encourage everyone to help meet our goal of a SmartBoard in every classroom - no donation is too small!!!

The Dominoes have been hard at work this week with math facts and identifying main ideas in stories.  We also had Halloween thrown in there for good measure!  I saw a lot of sleepy third graders on Thursday, so thankfully they have a four day weekend to recover.

Please note the following information:

From the Foundation:

3rd Grade Parents,

Thanks to each and every family for your years of support of the Sope Creek Foundation.  We all count ourselves fortunate to be part of the Sope Creek community and are grateful for the wonderful educational benefits Sope Creek provides.

The Foundation is excited about the possibility of adding innovative learning to each and every classroom this year with SmartBoards.  Our goal is to raise $100,000.  However, to make this a reality for every Sope Creek student, we need 100% participation from every Sope Creek family.  No gift is too small.

The boards will be installed in the grades with the highest participation.  Currently, 3rd grade has only 19% participation.  For those who have already given, we thank you!

Won't YOU consider a tax deductible contribution to the SmartKids Campaign?
