Reading Logs
As you know we ask that the children read a minimum of 400 minutes per month and that they write these minutes down on their Reading Logs. The third grade teachers and I have noticed a trend where either the logs are not being turned in at the end of the month or that the students have not met the 400 minute requirement. I had eight students fit one of the above descriptions today. We cannot stress how important it is that your child continue reading independently at home. By reading at home your child is guaranteed to experience continued growth in their reading levels. In a typical month it's only 13 - 15 minutes a day! This is one of the reasons that I do not give excessive amounts of homework during the week (so that they can read).
What I've decided to start doing is spot checking the reading logs during the week. If by Friday a student has not met their minutes goal then I will keep them in on Friday for Study Hall so they can read independently. I am looking for around 60 minutes for each Monday through Thursday period. Please help your child keep up with these! As such I will discuss with the class the need to keep their Reading Logs in their binders.
Thank you so much for your help!
