Devastating Tornado in Moore, Oklahoma

Images from Moore, Oklahoma this afternoon are described as "jaw dropping", "horrific",  and "unbelieveable". This most recent natural disaster reminds us of the capriciousness of nature and the destructive power that can be unleashed in our communities. The images of the shattered schools are particularly disturbing. Please remember that our very young children cannot absorb such images and need to be protected from them. As you discuss this tragedy with your older students, remember that our neighbors in Oklahoma are going to be needing so much in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. This may be an opportunity for you and your older child to discuss ways you can help by making a contribution to any of the numerous aid agencies that will be at the forefront in Moore. This is yet another "teachable moment" during which you can impart to your child your own sense of empathy and caring for our fellow citizens. Of all the lessons learned from Moore, generosity toward others is a worthy one. The American Red Cross website may be accessed at

No Child Hungry!

Lunchbag
As summer rapidly approaches, thousands of children are facing hunger each day. Without the support of school breakfast and lunch programs, many little people will not have the nutrition necessary to continue to grow and develop. We would like to share a wonderful resource for families in need during the summer months.

Boston Marathon Tragedy

Monday, April 15, 2013

We want to take this opportunity to offer our deepest concern for the innocent victims of the Boston Marathon bombings which took place this afternoon. Despite the accompanying shock, dismay, outrage, and bewilderment felt by all in our Sope Creek community as we witness yet another senseless incident, we want to remind you about how to address this "unthinkable tragedy" with your child. Very young children quite simply need to be shielded from the media coverage in Boston. They also need to be shielded from adult conversation about the event as they may inadvertently overhear scary details. Older students are media savvy, and they will hear about the bombings from their friends. Depending on their maturity level, you may decide it would be best for you to be the one to share the news first with them. Keep your explanation simple and fact based. Then be quiet and listen for their questions. Children want reassurance about their own safety.  Let them know that the adults who love them are dedicated to keeping them safe and secure...at home and at school. If your child seems particulary distressed, please don't hesitate to contact one of your school counselors. We know that you join each of us in keeping all of the people in Boston in our thoughts and hearts.

Skills Groups for Children

Solve_the_puzzle_hg_clr
As parents, we are sometimes "puzzled" by our children's behavior or their need for specific skill building to help them at home and at school. We have two wonderful resources in our area offering summer camps and groups just for kids. Art It Out and Marietta Counseling for Children and Adults offer a wide range of skill building groups. We are attaching links to these resources. They may or may not accept insurance payments, so be sure to ask!

Thanks_md_clr

Thanks to everyone who attended our CSCA Mini-Conference session, "Great Groups"! We have included the handouts mentioned during our presentation on February 8, 2013. It was wonderful to  "group up" with fellow counselors and review the importance of small group counseling in a comprehensive school counseling program.

What Can Newtown Teach Us?

Love_the_world_heart_hg_clr
As we begin our Winter Break, the Sope Creek counselors continue to reflect on last week's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and try to process its meanings and lessons. While the enormity of this violence is unmistakable and unimaginable, we believe the children and adults so suddenly taken have left behind important lessons. Please take time during the next few weeks to hug your children, spend quality time with them, heal old family wounds, explore ways you might help the Newtown community, and ways you might influence officials to address some of the important social problems that exist in our country. It is the least we can do to honor the memory of these 26 souls.

Celebrating the World of Work!

Thank you

Sope Creek students, counselors, and staff want to extend a huge "THANK YOU" to each of our fifty-five Career Day speakers for visiting with us on December 18, 2012. It was the best Career Day ever! Our children learned about some  really cool careers, and had an opportunity to ask thought provoking questions of our guests. We are so fortunate to work and learn in our supportive Sope Creek community.

Responding to Sudden Tragedies

The news today is filled with shock, horror and sadness following a violent incident at a Connecticut elementary school. Our hearts go out to the families directily involved as well as the entire school community. When sudden tragedies occur, we often have difficulty processing and understanding how it could happen, and whether we could be vulnerable as well. If this is difficult for adults to understand, it is impossible for children. Therefore, we recommend the following guidelines as you process the news this weekend:

  • BLOCK your child's viewing of items related to this news story
  • Do not discuss this tragedy around your children until you have had time to think about what they need to know at their particular age
  • If you child asks a question, consider their age before answering
  • Clarify your child's question before answering
  • Sometimes we tell kids much more than they are really asking
  • Reassure your child that your number one job is to keep them safe
  • Reassure your child that school is a safe place should they express any fears
  • Try to find time to be together as a family
  • Contact your school counselor if you have concerns or questions
  • Our direct phone number is 770-916-7088

Please see the link below for additional information about talking to children about this terrible incident.

Your Fabulous Five-Year-Old!

Jamal_playing_in_leaves_with_friend_hg_clrThe minute they walked through the doors of Sope Creek, our fabulous Kindergarten students instantly energized our school! No other group of children grow and change more than our newest Sope Creek citizens. They are complex indivduals, with specific developmental gifts and needs. Check out this excellent University of Maine site which describes what 5 year-olds are like, their physical characteristics, games and toys to promote their learning, their emotional needs, and tips for parents.
