Language Arts
This week we will read our final story in our Second Reading Book. The title is "Little Gorilla". Children will read about how much Little Gorilla is loved by his family and friends when he is a baby. Then he grows up and they see how much he is still loved by everyone. We will have our second Reading Skills Test on Friday, November 2nd. This time I will not be able to read any of the sentences to my students so they must read independently without any assistance.
Math
We are continuing to work on Subtraction strategies. We should finish Chapter 5 by the end of this week. If we are able to finish this chapter, then we will have a test on Friday, November 2nd.
"I Love a Book Parade
We will start our parade at 8:05 AM from our room and walk around the school through all the hallways. Please remember to have your child in costume when they come to school, but send a change of clothes if they need to change after the parade. We will have special stories after the parade as we rotate to three other classrooms on our hallway. Our moms have collaborated and we will have special "Treat Bags" to take home at the end of the day. Thank you parents for your help with this project.

Sope Creek Make a Difference Student Awards
Due to popular demand this program is being restarted this year to reward outstanding student behaviors in individual classrooms. The child chosen each week will receive their own "silver" "Make a Difference" coin to keep as their very own prize. Other children will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their classrooms by their behavior choices and committments to helping others throughout our school. We are looking forward to our first award winner.
Dear Parents,
We will be practicing a Code Red Drill next week. We will explain the procedures to the children and all doors will be locked at that time. We are required to do these drills several times each year. We will also continue to practice monthly Fire Drills, and our Tornado Drills.
We just wanted to keep you updated on these Safety Drills at Sope Creek. Thank you.
Picture Sales
Thank you for sending in your picture orders and packages in record time. We did not have the highest sales' total to win the extra classroom supply money, but we did receive a party for our prompt responses. Thanks to your hard work, the Comets will enjoy their ice cream.
Math
We are finishing our Second Chapter in Math on Subtraction. We will take our tests this week and then for the second nine weeks, we will continue studying math facts to 12, data (graphing), representing numbers to 100, and 2-D and 3-D Shapes. We are also including some activities from our previous math series, "Everyday Math," since that series promoted understanding of number relationships and higher order thinking skills. All First Grade Teachers will be participating by including these activites.
Language Arts
We are reading a delightful story this week called, "Bet You Can't". This is a great story about the "give and take" between a sister and her little brother. By now you have received your letter about our Friday Classroom, "I Can Do It Day" activity. Each child will present some activity or skill that they choose to share with their classmates on that day.
