Newsletter Updates for January 30 - February 3rd, 2012

Thank You!

A big thanks from our class to everyone who sent in 100th Day snacks!  We mixed up our donations in a big tub and handed out paper cups and napkins for everyone to count to 100.  Then we ate our snack!

We also enjoyed rotating to five other teachers to learn how to do different 100 day counting activities.  Our books are coming home today.

Math

We have finished our units with Counting and Trading Money and we took our Chapter Test. Now we will move to Graphing.  We are learning how to read and use information in graphs.

Reading

We are working on vocabulary work in our reading groups to make sure we understand all the different meanings of words in our reading books.  We will also continue to bring home books to read independently.

Social Studies

We are finished with our study of an American Hero, Harriet Tubman.  Slavery can be a difficult subject for children of this age, but they have grasped the life skills that Harriet and other Americans used as they showed their courage, perseverance, and hard work to overcome unjust laws.  We made a paper class quilt to show the hidden meanings of the quilt blocks as this was one way to have a map to escape to the free states and Canada. 

Next week we will began learning about Teddy Roosevelt, the Father of our National Parks System.

 

 

School Spirit Day February 3rd

Next Friday, February 3rd, is our next School Spirit Day.  Please let your child wear their class T-shirt or other Sope Creek Shirt that day.

 

Exciting News for next Thursday, February 2 at 7:00 PM

Our music teacher has chosen First Grade to sing for the PTA Program next week.  Please be sure your child is ready and in the cafeteria before 6:55 PM.  Clean jeans and a solid colored shirt are the dress requirements.  Hope to see you there!

Report Card Envelopes

 

Please try to return your report card envelope tomorrow, unsealed, with the white signature card.  This envelope will be used one more time for the 3rd Grading Period so returning it promptly ensures that they will not be lost or misplaced.  Thank you!

Homework

Please check your child's folder for our new spelling words for the week.

Math

We finished inputting our Benchmark Data into I Repond but now we need to complete the IMI for the 3rd Grading Period.  We also finished our Shapes Unit today.  Thanks for your help at home with IXL.  The Class received an award for answering 35,000 problems!

Reading

Please continue to use Raz Kids at home as everyone is making great progress.  Thanks for working a little bit over the Holidays with Reading and other skills.

 

Movie Night- January 20th

 

Dear Students and Parents,

The first ever Sope Creek Family Movie Night is coming on January 20, 2012.  It is being sponsored by the Student Council.  We will be showing The Smurfs and National Treasure 2.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase, but you can BYOC (Bring Your Own Candy).  We will be expecting that you bring your parents because this is a family event – no drop offs, please.  So mark your calendar – January 20 7:00-9:00 in the cafeteria and the media center.  Optional donation for Must Ministries gladly accepted.

Cogat Scores have arrived at Sope Creek

We have received first grade CogAT scores.  The vendor does not distribute individual score reports for students/parents.  If you would like a copy of your child's scores, please contact the teacher.

Reasoning skills develop gradually throughout a person’s lifetime and at different rates for different individuals. Urgent Need - Holiday Helper Bears Sponsored by our Counselors

                                                            
The Counselors have asked that you reconsider and try to pick up a "Holiday Helper Bear".  Most of these are $10.00 Gift Card requests.  The need is much greater this year and the number of particicpants has fallen over previous years.  Thank you.

Polar Express Updates for December 9th

All Aboard!

We will join the Whatley's Wildcats in the morning to hear a reading of The Polar Express.  Pajamas are optional and especially in the morning it will be chilly so dress warmly in sweats or comfortable clothes.  We will be making a Polar Express Book and watching part of the movie sometime tomorrow.

Sacagawea

We will have a visit with Sacagawea next Tuesday at 9:00 AM in the Media Center.  She was a very responsible guide for the Lewis and Clark "Voyage of Discovery" to map the Louisiana Purchase.  Without her lifeskills of courage and bravery, plus her knowledge of the land and languages, Lewis and Clark might not have reached the Pacific Ocean.  We are following their trip with a map, making canoes, learning about keelboats, and looking at items to take on a long trip to explore new lands.

Checkpoint Testing

We will have two different days of Checkpoint Testing on Monday, Dec. 12th, and Wednesday, Dec. 14th for Math and Language Arts.  We will be using the IRespond System after we take a paper and pencil test.  Students have to learn to input their own testing data into the IRespond System.  There is no special preparation to worry about as this is intended to cover areas we have already studied in class.

Lost Blue Old Navy Coat

I have a size 4 Old Navy blue coat with grey flannel interior lining, but none of the Comets are claiming it as their coat.  If this sounds familiar to you, please let me know and I will send it home with your child.  Thanks.

Holiday Helper Bears Update-See Front Lobby Bulletin Board

 

Dear Sope Creek Family:

We are holding our Annual Holiday Bear gift card program and would like you to consider making a gift card donation to help our Sope Creek families during this holiday season. Bears with store and amount designations are posted on the main bulletin board in the school lobby.  Please consider helping by taking a bear and obtaining a gift card.  Gift cards can be returned to your child’s grade level counselor by December 15.  Your generosity will help to make this a brighter holiday for many of our children and their families.  Thank you in advance, and may each of you have a wonderful holiday.

Welcome Back from Thanksgiving Holidays!

I hope everyone had a nice, restful, long week of vacation.  I believe the Comets were a little sleepy yesterday, but we were happy to see everyone well and back with us in class.

Thank you so much for my class gift certificate and the many cards and notes regarding my birthday recently.  I will enjoy using my gift certificate and I am looking for something special for myself!

December is Almost Here!

Next, Monday, December 5th, we need to have all of our library media center books with us as we are  going to hear a special story and to check out books.  We can check out books daily, but we enjoy listening to our Media Specialist share special books with us.

We are excited about December's special activities.  We will have a special PJ Day on December 9th (optional) when we hear The Polar Express read by one of our administrators.

Curriculum Writing Seminar-November 10th

I will be out of the building tomorrow for the entire day due to a Curriculum Writing Seminar that is mandatory for all of the First Grade Team.  Please know I will get back to you as soon as I can, and remember any changes in Transportation need to be in writing through a note from home.  Thanks.
