Delicious Domino Math

Did you know that we can generate an entire fact family from one domino? Recently the Butterflies picked several dominoes to find the four fact family number sentences. Then we chose one to create an edible domino. Yummy! View the photos below to see a few examples.Cimg2474 Click on the image to enlarge it!

Thanksgiving Greetings!

With the busy holiday season approaching we will be learning about magnets, Mexico, Canada, and enjoy lots of  seasonal literature while we learn.  Because of the time constraints of the holiday season, we will begin with the Butterfly of the Week again in 2008.

We are looking forward to seeing our buddies on Monday,  November 19  to make an edible turkey. You may want to start this tradition with your family. directions will come home on Monday to share. Thank you for donating the ingredients for our get together.  The Thanksgiving Feast is also that day. This is a dress up affair for the students. We'll dine by candlelight and have beautifully adorned tables, courtesy of our wonderful PTA.(sorry, students only)
After Monday we'll be sending home our Thanksgiving crafts and a special book we have made for your family's celebration.  Use them to make  your home festive! We will spend Monday and Tuesday learning more about nouns, reviewing word families, and graphing ! No new story this week.
*This week included a severe weather drill, Birthday Book Club and the Literacy Committee's Book Swap.  A former Butterfly parent, Mr. Cavanagh, became a pilgrim and visited our room on Friday morning. Ask your student about it!
*We'll have Hearing and Vision screening the week after Thanksgiving, begin our study of magnets, and take a ride on the Polar Express!
*Please consider making a donation to the Foundation's Smart Board campaign. Any donation will be welcome.  Donations from grandparents and businesses are also welcomed.
*When I count my blessings, working with you and your children is an important one for me!

If your travels take you away this weekend be safe and have a very

Reptiles and Weather- We have seen it all!

This was an exciting week in first grade at Sope Creek. Our in house field trip about weather was hands-on and a great review. The materials and experiments were numerous and each child had the materials in his/her hands! The students were attentive and received  a compliment on their behavior and background knowledge. Some misconceptions were cleared up and I got an accurate pulse on what we had learned in this science area.

Ask your Butterfly about the Reptile man and his varied friends.  He is quite an amazing naturalist and has a wonderful quiet way with large groups  of children (and large reptiles).

With Thanksgiving around the corner we will learn several seasonal poems and make some keepsakes to share and help make your homes festive.  We will not have a thanksgiving program for parents because of the short time we have before our break. We will have a fun turkey activity  shared with the Sea Turtles, our fourth grade buddies.  I will let you know what you can send in to help with this healthy edible turkey. You will also get instructions to make your own if you want!

Vocabulary is becoming more difficult for several of our young readers. PLEASE review the words we are learning each week. Also... Begin to use addition flash cards. They are available at most stores that sell school supplies.
