Short Notes on a Short Week!

It was a wonderful week to be your student's classroom teacher! The Cobb County Teacher of the Year Celebration at the Roswell Street Baptist Church was a pep rally I will never forget. I only wish all of the students could have attended. We were limited to 10 and I know the entire class knows how I appreciate their flowers and good wishes.

If you had a chance to attend the I Love a Book Day parade you had a treat. The students had fun as the entire school go to see their wonderful testament to the love of reading. Thanks to Mr. Lopez for reading Piggy Pie and other favorites to four classrooms of First Graders.

There will be not school on Monday and Tuesday for the students. We will wear our Class T-shirts on Wednesday for the in-house field trip on weather called  Weather or Not. On Wednesday we will have lunch in our classroom after our turn  with the presentation and experiments.  Thank you for turning in the permission slips.

November 8th is the Reptile Man. His visit is sponsored by the PTA and he comes every other year. He is wonderful and his reptiles unforgettable.

We'll complete the story Little Gorilla  and take the end of book test next Thursday or Friday. This time the students will be required to read the test themselves after directions are made clear.  I will send the results home as soon as I have graded them.

We have very few days in school before Thanksgiving. Let's make the most of them by reviewing work that comes home and reading every day. I have noticed that the trick words are sometimes misspelled in written work. Remember all the Fundations trick words are for mastery in reading and spelling.

Helper Parents next week on the schedule are Kathy Carroll and Debbie Redmond and Story Parent: Rose Behm

Maps, Math ,and Halloween !

This week will be as busy as ever! Our story teller, Bettie Ann Whilie postponed her visit and will share stories on Monday. Tuesday some of the students will join in the county pep rally for Teachers of the Year at Roswell Street Baptist Church. Thank you to the parents who will drive, chaperon, and return the class back to school. Wednesday we'll have our parade and hear several great local story tellers in the form of Sope Creek Moms and Dads.  Then the children will enjoy Halloween and that's in just the first three days of the week. We are working with maps, subtraction, and begin a new month. Thanks you for keeping current with all of our activities.  The in house field trip form  is due quite quickly. We are assigned our collection dates. I hope this doesn't create a problem for any of you.  Enjoy a safe and fun Halloween week!

Congratulations Patrick!

Today our first recipient of the Make a Difference Award was announced! Patrick was our first winner. He is now the proud owner of the Make a Difference coin which is his to keep. He earned the award by being helpful to others and a good classroom citizen. Congratulations Patrick! We will have a new winner each week. Stay tuned for more good news.

Emeline also won the drawing for Red Ribbon Week in the lunchroom today. She is the proud new owner of a refillable water bottle. Congratulations!

As the sandwich boards come in for October 31, please be sure to add your own ribbon or yard to the tops so they are ready to wear. The work so far is terrific! Be sure to follow the directions! Thanks!

Red Ribbon Week October 15-19

Red Ribbon Week is a very special week at Sope Creek! We will celebrate a healthy life style and our committment to living drug free.  In this week's Friday fliers please pull the schedule for each day's special focus. Wear red on Monday for a start!

We had fun with Thunder Cake on Thursday. Besides our focus on science and the weather, this fictional story of a child overcoming the fear of thunder, provided us the opportunity to learn more about characters and setting in stories. Come by and see our thunder cake quilt! But ...the children will tell you the best part of all was having the real Thunder Cake baked for us by Debbie Redmond. Yum yum! See the photo at the bottom of our blog.

Thanks Mrs. Redmond for all you do fo us. Butterflies_class_fall_activities_3

Mrs. Lombardi ,one of our great school counselors, has requested that I remind you of the National Day of Service coming up in October.  We are asking each family to "Make a Difference" in memory of Dr. Karen Looft. Please take the next step and share with us, in a short note, what your family did in her memory. Just send  the note to the classroom by November 1.

The Halloween People you've created are fun to view. The students love to look at them!

Next up is the I Love a Book Day Parade on October 31. Please review the direction sheet as early as possible.  Try to stop in first thing in the morning for our parade through the school. As aButterflies_class_fall_activities_1 Butterflies_class_fall_activities_2 lways, parking  will be at a premium. Carpool if you can or arrive early!

We Need Your Blood....

On October 16, the PTA is providing an opportunity for you to make a difference in this world and to be a hero to your child. The Red Cross will be taking blood donations on this date at Sope Creek . All you need to do to is be healthy, drink extra water the day before, and weigh at least 110 pounds. Please consider giving the gift of life. Your Butterfly will be so proud!

October is a very busy month in our classroom and out!

Reflections entries are due next week.

I Can do It Day is Friday, October 5. We will focus our presentations on everyday skills and talents. Please help your child prepare a short, 3-5 minute demonstration or presentation of their talent. Past presentations have ranged from changing a diaper, to braiding hair, to Karate routines in full dress.

If your child wants to dress for their presentation just send in extra clothes for  the rest of the day.

We'll be presenting in the morning. Come ready to go!

I Love a Book Day and Halloween (favorite book character) People are the other two October projects that require some parental involvement. News about these simple activities will come to you in a timely manner.Keep an eye on the homework folder. As always, it is our first communication link.

Report cards also come out this month.  Continue to review papers as they come home and support your child by keeping up with daily reading and homework assignments.

I hope to see you all at Octoberfest on Saturday!  Consider a bid on our Spooky Butterfly or the teacher outing for our class. Enjoy your week!
