Literature Circle Training by our LSS Becky Grindstaff

Are you in a book club? This week we are practicing this life long skill from our LSS, Becky Grindstaff. We have been learning in greater detail about making connections  in text to self, text, and world, by learning to take on different roles in book  club discussions. So far, we have been exposed to these skills by sharing a poem and then practicing each job in small groups. First we learned to be the Artful Artist. Discussion Director and Connector are the other two jobs we explored. Next week we will learn about the other roles in the literature circle. After this training and CRCT Testing ,we will give it a whirl.  Each lesson has been taught on our Smartboard. Did you know that smartboard is a compound word? We've been looking for them this week and writing sentences using compound words. Much of our work is done on the dry erase boards so we can make corrections easily and be "green " in the process. Once again, we want to thank the generosity of our parents who supported the Foundation Fund Raising Drive. Each day it is my goal to have every student touching the board and engaged in the  endless interactive activities available.

On top of this we have started a special surprise for mom. Shhh...It's a secret.

Our CRCT review begins in earnest. Please practice online using the information I have given you.

Send a note or email if you need another copy of your ten digit I.D. number to get onto the site.

Have a great week. We are all excited about sharing our photos, stuffed animals, and pets on Friday.

Next week we will have a story but no homework on test evenings. A good night's rest, 2 healthy snacks, a water bottle, and sending your child in on time and in a happy frame of mind, are the parts you play as parents for testing. THESE ARE VERY IMPORTAMT! We test Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next week

Thanks you for all you do to help your student be successful!

Spring Happenings for the Butterflies

Looking ahead to the not so distant future, we are beginning to think about the skills we have developed for the CRCT. PLEASE take time to go online and practice the tests. Much  success depends upon being familiar with the format!  Sit down with your child and discuss how to consider and eliminate answers. Just drop me a note or email if you have lost your 10 digit sign in  student ID number.  Report cards will be coming your way on Thursday. March 20. Please send back the signature card in the unsealed envelope. Send in Square 1 Art Orders, if you are interested in a reorder.

The Volunteer Luncheon is my way to thank you for all of your help this year. Consider coming by during our lunch time in the Media Center and having a bite or just a cup of tea with me and other Butterfly parents.

We 're having fun using the Smart Board. We can't wait to have one every day!!!!

The students are growing up right before my eyes. They will soon be second graders. I plan to enjoy each day ahead with them and push them to reach for the stars. I really enjoy working with them!

You are welcome to stay as long as you want to enjoy other Sope Creek parents!

Career Day / Early Release Day... Tuesday!

Last week we had spring picture day and our children do photograph well! The poses were fun for the students and look quite professional. I can't wait to see the finished results! Please consider supporting this school project with your check.

We will be reading Arnold Lobel next. His stories have a humorous grain of truth about friendship. In math we will continue our study of money by counting mixed coins of dimes, nickels, pennies and quarters.

Please help at home. the math addition facts are getting a bit more demanding and will require a lot more practice. Our goal after +9 will be 100 facts in a hurry. If you need a little direction, start with + doubles, then doubles +1.

Fast forward to spring and science. Our focus will be plants and  animals. This is such a broad study that we will key in on the essential question of, "What are the needs of plants and animals?"                        How  are your visits to the CRCT test site? Please make at least a weekly stop at that site to review and practice for the CRCT that will be the third week in April.

Report cards come out again in March. I am proud of how the children are taking more responsibility for their own products in class. Putting forth effort is the key to success in all we do. Hard work trumps ability every time!

How do I care for my teeth?

This week we will learn the four ways to keep our teeth healthy for life. Can you name them now? Each of the students will construct a toothbrush that can be hung in at home to remind us. We'll see what happens to enamel when it is placed in various  common liquids. The results are dramatic. Ask your Butterfly about it on Friday!

Tuesday is picture day! This is the day that your child will be photographed individually and with the class. I hope you consider supporting this fund raiser and that all the students are healthy and at school on time. First graders are photographed early that morning. It is not a PE day.

The stamps you created are unique and thoughtful. As your students presented their stamp to the class the pride was evident. This Friday is the 5th grade Famous American Reception. We will be able to see each fifth grader parade past us as we line the hallways. It is just one event that makes Sope Creek such an excellent place for children to learn and grow. Sack lunches will be eaten in the room on Friday.

Consult the newsletter for other news of the week and enjoy the last week of February!
