April 2012
Much progress has been made on the new addition! See the pictures below and read about how the building is coming along!
Completed Recently:
- Light fixtures have been delivered.
- Concrete has been poured at the side entrances and in the Butterfly Garden - connecting the main building to the new addition.
- Walls have come down and the hallways to connect the two buildings has begun.
- Tile and grout are installed in the bathrooms.
- The first coat of paint has been applied to the walls.
- Electricity is connected!
- Doors and windows are being installed.
- It really looks like a building!
- Construction on the storage addition to the cafeteria has begun.
Other Construction/Preparation:
- The front of the building has received some work - trees have been removed near Paper Mill Road - in preparation for the DOT SPLOST Project to add a turning lane. Electric poles will be moved closer in to campus, and when school resumes in August 2012, the carpool lane and Paper Mill Road will have some significant improvements.
- A major pipe right in front of the office has been replaced. The ground currently is turned over and will be re-landscaped once all pipe issues are resolved.

February 2012
A rainy winter and fall meant a muddy beginning to the construction of the physical buliding. The construction crews and engineers persevered and completed leveling the land, pouring the foundation, and began constructing the walls! We can actually see the brick and mortar and can now see the size of the new addition!

October 2011
We are a month into construction and we are excited about the changes we already can see! So far,
- The second exit to the parking lot has been transformed to a construction only entrance/exit. This makes morning carpool trafffic very heavy. Thank you to the Foundation for providing a traffic officer to help with this! Good news is that we have lost no parking spaces.
- Fencing has encircled the majority of the campus to protect students.
- Work is almost complete on the detention pond at the back of campus. Once work is complete on this portion, permanent fencing will surround the detention pond and we will reclaim a large portion of our playground space.
- Dirt from the detention pond is used to fill in land that will become our twelve room addition. Good news: Sope Creek has GREAT DIRT!!!
- The sanitary sewer line has been installed.
- Heavy equipment operates daily and the changes are quite visible.

December 2010
The Sope Creek Administration and Staff are excited to begin the planning process toward a SPLOST III funded 12 classroom addition and renovations to the existing building. We are in the beginning stages of the process, and will be working diligently over the next year to ensure that we are able to maximize these renovations and improve the school to benefit students. Plans are currently in the conceptual stage and may change over time as we work with our SPLOST Project Manager and J.W. Robinson Architechts.
Sope Creek is slated to receive:
- A 12 classroom addition (it will be added at the front of the building - an extension off of what is currently the 1st grade hallway). The addition will include a meeting space for staff, small study rooms for students, work rooms, staff and student bathrooms, and custodial space.
- Re-roofing and an updated fire protection system for the Annex.
- Interior and exterior painting of the building
- Replacement of the gym heating/air system.
- Updated lighting in the gym.
- A new emergency generator
- Updated/replace parking lot lighting
- Renovation of the kitchen areas - including updated freezer and construction of a new dry storage area.
- New shelving in the kitchen
- Air conditioning in the kitchen
- Updated front office
- Expand records vault
The project will begin in August 2011, and the goal is for the addition to be open for the start of the school year 2012.
At the end of the renovations and additions, we should no longer need to house any classes in portables, and the campus should be trailer-free. As updates are made, we will post the information here. There will be two public forums to update the community on the project.
