Did you know that Sope Creek is one of the first elementay schools to implement STEM education?
What is STEM? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Why is it important? The four core areas of STEM are growing increasingly important for students to understand. Their world will require them to innovate, to create, and to THINK. Jobs when they are ready for the workforce will require competencies in these areas. As part of our mission to Grow Responsible Citizens, it is our obligation to ensure an education that will prepare students for THEIR WORLD....and to begin doing so in Kindergarten!
Who teaches STEM? Kerry Lance is our STEM teacher. She serves all 1,100+ Kindergarten through 5th grade students! As a part of their "specials" rotation, students visit the STEM lab about every 6-7 days.
What do students study in STEM? Hands-on integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Mrs. Lance has written curriculum that addresses the Georgia Performance Standards in each grade level and provides hands-on, minds-on learning opportunities. Check out her blog to see more about what is going on in Sope Creek STEM: http://sopecreeklibrary.typepad.com/lance/
How can I support this? The Sope Creek Foundation is working diligently to make STEM an even more opportunity for our students. Their current capital campaign is The Nifty Fifty. All families are encouraged to donate. Would you like more information on The Nifty Fifty? Visit the Foundation Website!
Mrs. Dressel's Second Grade Class did such a fabulous job with the Nifty Fifty Campaign that they earned the opportunity to participate in some of the MESSIEST Science: Mentos Geyser Tubes! See them in action in the video below!

Would you like to better understand your child's ITBS or CogAT scores? Do you know the difference between a norm-referenced test and a criterion-referenced test? How is the CRCT different from the ITBS and CogAT? Have you heard of the Benchmark Test or the Checkpoint? We would like to help you understand how to interpret your child's test scores and how they reveal your child's academic strengths and weaknesses.
Please join us on January 24th at 11:30 in the library reference room for a Lunch and Learn to dig into standardized testing. R.S.V.P. by January 19th so we can have a copy of your child's test scores ready for you. Click here to RSVP.
