With the end of the school year right around the corner, it’s time for us to begin planning for the next school year. The anticipation of a new school year brings some apprehension from families concerning their children’s placement for the next year. Every year many questions are raised about placement and the need for input from parents. We know that it is your desire for your child to be placed with the teacher who will match her/his needs perfectly.
We want you to know how seriously we take the placement process at Sope Creek. After consulting with all school personnel who have worked with a child, current grade level teams create proposed class lists of students. The teachers pay close attention to the students’ learning styles and strengths, academic performance and work/study habits. They also attempt to include an equal number of boys and girls in each class and make certain that the make-up of the students is as heterogeneous as possible. Specialists, student academic support staff, counselors and administrators also review proposed class lists. Once class lists are created the administrators and counselors work together to match the well-balanced classes with a talented teacher. Classes are reviewed again in August as newly registered students are assigned. The entire process takes many hours of work over several days. We are proud of this well-planned process and the dedication of the staff to ensure that more than 1,180 students are carefully placed.
We welcome parental input into this process, but only to share additional student information of which we are unaware. Input of this nature, if necessary, should be submitted in writing to me by April 15. Please do NOT include requests for specific teachers, as these requests will not be honored. If older siblings have had a certain teacher and you would prefer for your next child to have a different experience, then feel free to write a short note stating this (we don’t need details). A description of the learning environment that best suits your child and/or the name of any children who should be separated from him/her may be included as well. With the careful process that is outlined above, you can understand why all placement correspondence must be received no later than April 15. Due to time constraints, individual conferences with administrators will not be conducted regarding placement for next year. With or without a parent letter, each Sope Creek student will be placed with thoughtful care and consideration.
Several of our teachers are “looping” with their classes. The looping model allows teachers and students to spend two or more years together. Research has shown that students benefit when they are taught by the same teacher for more than one year. Some of the benefits of “looping” include: consistent exposure to classroom routines and procedures; continuation of instruction; improved rapport between parents and teachers; students already know one another and the teacher which eliminates the summer anxiety.
Thank you for the trust you place in us to care for your children’s academic needs as well as their development into well-rounded, engaged learners.
Blackboard Connect - This allows the district and Sope Creek to send phone messages, emails, or texts. You choose the way in which you'd like to receive messages. Here at Sope Creek, phone messages are used very infrequently. Most of our "robocalls" are actually robo-emails and robo-texts.
Sope Creek Twitter - This serves as our live feed from our website. As many of you know, feedblitz updates come once a day and usually late at night. Our twitter feed will give you instant notification of any posts to our main school site. Right now, we have 251 followers.
Cobb Schools Twitter - During the recent inclement weather, CCSD was updating to their twitter feed a little faster than the website. They also share a lot of the good news stories occurring in our schools.
Phone Calls - We are rapidly becoming a cell-phone preferred society. However, many times when we call, parents don't answer because they don't recognize our number. Please program the following phone numbers into your cell as "Sope Creek" so we can connect more efficiently:
Websites and Blogs - Our county website is easy to use and hosts a lot of important information. Our Sope Creek main site contains information specific to our community - upcoming school events, contact information for our staff, and links to our teachers' blogs.
Cobb County Prevention Intervention Youth Specialist will address cyber-bullying with students and parents on March 23.
Jeff will meet with the students at 10:00 and he will follow this session with an important parent session 11:00-12:15. He will share important social media, cyber-bullying and bullying information. Both sessions will be held in the Leadership Lodge.
This Inside Track is designed to address our 5th grade parents and students.
