We are excited to be kicking off the 2014-15 Honoring Our Heroes Essay program! Honoring Our Heroes is a writing program that encourages students to discover, honor, and write about real-life heroes - role models displaying generosity, trust, persistence, dedication, leadership, creativity, caring, bravery, imagination, service, gentleness, courage or compassion. Students are asked to redefine media-hyped and cartoon heroes such as professional athletes, movie stars, and rock musicians and instead recognize someone who has made a more personal impact on the student's life such as a family member, doctor, public safety officer, soldier, or teacher.
What a great opportunity to honor someone who may not even know what a difference they are making in your student's life!
The student entry form can be found on the PTA website or by clicking here. Entries are due by Monday, February 16.
Our School Council's main priority is to facilitate communication between the various and diverse groups at Sope Creek. Parent Volunteers and representatives from our PTA, Foundation, Administration, Counselors, and Teachers work together to provide a link between our community and school.

The OI Juice Bar at Sope Creek Elementary is up and running! Each Friday, the students provide juice for 40 staff members, totaling 480 oz of juice. Using our brand new donated juicer, we showcased our “Green Lemonade” recipe, consisting of Romaine lettuce, kale, apples, and lemons. Thanks to everyone who participated. We’ll look forward to putting some “Green in your 2015” every Friday!

House Bill 244 was passed by the legislature and signed by the governor in the spring of 2013. HB 244 is the law that guides school districts on the necessary components of school leader and teacher evaluation instruments. Included for the first time in this law is a measurement to account for student learning growth that occurs in a course or grade.
The Cobb County School District will implement Student Learning Objective Assessments during the 2014-2015 school year in second grade, middle school and high school. Except for rare instances, these assessments consist of a pre-test in January/February and a post-test in April/May.
What is a Student Learning Objective (SLO)?
SLOs are subject-specific learning objectives that provide growth measures for student learning. Teams of Cobb County teachers from throughout the district developed the SLO assessments that we will administer this spring.
For the 2014-2015 school year, the SLO implementation requires teachers to use assessments to determine student growth over the course of a semester. The results of these assessments ensure that students, teachers, and schools are moving toward a common vision of exemplary instruction and high levels of student academic growth.
What SLO Assessments will students take for the 2014-2015 school year?
Only second graders will take an SLO in Reading and Mathematics this spring. Second grade students who receive gifted services will also take an SLO covering gifted content.
When will students take SLO Assessments?
Students at Sope Creek will take the SLO assessments during the week of January 12. No special preparation is needed for these assessments. Please help ensure your student in in attendance for these assessments.
