Lost and Found

Our lost and found is overflowing!! We have three huge bags of lost items in addition to our normal lost and found. If your child is missing an item please come and claim it. Students can also look through the lost and found prior to the start of the school day or after lunch. We are planning on donating any unclaimed items at the end of February :)

Picture Day

Picture Day for our class will be Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 11:20. Pictures will be taken in the cafeteria, so we will be having sack lunches on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Important News from the Clinic and Administration:

We are starting to see an increase in illness at Sope Creek.  Please review and adhere to the following guidelines:

• Students need to be free from vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
• Students need to be fever free (without fever reducing medicine) for 24 hours before returning to school. 
• If your child has a serious cough, particularly if it’s accompanied by breathing difficulties call your MD and keep your child at home. Coughs can spread infection to other students.
• Students with Bacterial Conjunctivitis (pink eye) may return to school 24 hours after antibiotics are begun.  Students with Viral Conjunctivitis may return when eyes are “clear,” no apparent redness and no drainage present or with a written note from your MD. *The cause of the pink eye must be determined by a physician.

The single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease is by good hand washing!

Don't forget that if your child is absent, we need an excuse note.  Simply send in a note stating your child's name, their teacher, and the reason for absence.  Illness is a sufficient reason.  If you would like to download a Sope Creek absence excuse template, you may do so by clicking here.

Please volunteer for Sope Creek’s annual Career Day on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. This event for grades 1-5 will take place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Our counselors are recruiting speakers to address students about their career paths and the preparation necessary for career success. Reminders

Valentine Exchange is tomorrow, Feb. 14. Students may bring valentines for each student in the class. A class list was sent home last week. We made bags at school to put the valentines in, but students are welcome to make a box at home if they want.

 

 Papa John's Pizza Night is Tuesday, Feb. 14. Please send in your receipt if you order pizza!

 

Book Swap Collection Week is Feb. 13 - 17. Remember to send in your books with your form this week. Forms are available on the Sope Creek website.

Week of February 13 - February 24

Math - We will wrap up our chapter on fractions and will have our test on Tuesday, Feb. 14. We will then begin our study of decimals. Students will work toward demonstrating an understanding of decimals (0.3) decimal fractions (3/10).  We will also learn to add and subtract decimals. We will continue to work on counting back change using the fewest number of coins.

Language Arts - We will be reading our biographies of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. We will learn about the obstacles that they faced and how they overcame them. Our test on Franklin D. Roosevelt is this Friday, Feb. 17.  We will continue to discuss the elements of nonfiction texts such as table of contents, glossary, index, pictures, captions, tables and graphs, and headings.

Spelling -  This week we will be working on  Sort  18. We will learn to add -ed to words with VC, VCe, VVC, and VCC patterns (planned, saved, waited, wanted). Next week we will begin Sort 19 as we learn unusual past-tense words (draw - drew).  Spelling Sorts are on www.spellingcity.com. Students can print lists, practice cursive, and play games on this website.  In Grammar we will continue to learn about adjectives and adverbs. 

Social Studies - We will continue to learn about five major rivers in the United States:  Ohio River, Hudson River, Mississippi River, Rio Grande River, and the Colorado River. We will also learn about the four types of productive resources: human resources, capital resources, natural resources, and entrepreneurship.

Science - We continue our study of the regions of Georgia. Students have almost finished their reports and are now typing them!
