We will be going to the Media Center tomorrow. Please return your books if you want to get new ones.

Friday will be Terry's last day at Sope Creek. He and his family are moving back to South Korea. We will miss him very much! It won't be the same without him in our class.

Wellstar is coming today to talk to us about how  we can get fit and stay fit.

Our field trip to Puppetry Arts is next Tuesday, March 6th. I will send a reminder note home on Monday. Please be sure your child wears their class t-shirt that day. Also, please send in a really good snack for your child because we won't be eating lunch until we return from the trip and I don't want them to be hungry. We're going to have a fantastic day!

More of our Teddys are returning to our class. The Teddys have returned from California and right here in Georgia. Keep them coming!

In math we're finishing time. We will then be reviewing more addition and subtraction counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's. Keep practicing those math facts at home. The children are doing a great job!

We've started our study of plants and animals. We used a Venn diagram to compare plants and animals and what they need to live. Today we will be starting our experiment to see how plants grow if we take away either their nutrients, air or water. Will they survive? We will observe them and take observation notes every few days. We will also be planting seeds tomorrow and watching them sprout. Stay tuned for updates from the Alligators!

The Six Flags Reading Log is due on Monday, February 27th. Please have your children continue reading and return the sheet by Monday.

We will go to the Media Center tomorrow. Please return books and use Destiny if your child know what books they might like to check out.

We're continuing to receive more Flat Teddys. The children love learning all about the parks in other states. We've received information from Florida, California, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia. Keep them coming!

In math we're continuing to work on time to the hour and 1/2 hour. The children are enjoying our lessons and are doing a good job!

We're finishing our study of George Washington Carver this week and next week we will start our study of plants. I have a lot of information and great experiments for the children to do over the next few weeks.

I'm looking forward to the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on Friday. Thanks in advance for Shannon Evenstad, Corrine Hodges and Yael Zaibert for offering to watch the class during the luncheon. Special thanks to Melanie Landers for organizing my helper parents. I do have the best parents in the school!

Keep the Creek Healthy

Important News from the Clinic and Administration:

We are starting to see an increase in illness at Sope Creek.  Please review and adhere to the following guidelines:

• Students need to be free from vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
• Students need to be fever free (without fever reducing medicine) for 24 hours before returning to school. 
• If your child has a serious cough, particularly if it’s accompanied by breathing difficulties call your MD and keep your child at home. Coughs can spread infection to other students.
• Students with Bacterial Conjunctivitis (pink eye) may return to school 24 hours after antibiotics are begun.  Students with Viral Conjunctivitis may return when eyes are “clear,” no apparent redness and no drainage present or with a written note from your MD. *The cause of the pink eye must be determined by a physician.

The single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease is by good hand washing!

Don't forget that if your child is absent, we need an excuse note.  Simply send in a note stating your child's name, their teacher, and the reason for absence.  Illness is a sufficient reason.  If you would like to download a Sope Creek absence excuse template, you may do so by clicking here.

We had a wonderful Valentine's Day! The children had a great time with our Valentine math, making our "Love Bugs" and passing out the Valentines. Thank you all for my Valentine's goodies. You are the best parents in the school!

In math we are working on telling time to the hour and half hour. We will continue time for the next 2 weeks. Don't forget to do your IXL homework. It helps in the classroom. 

The children are having a great time learning all about George Washington Carver. Ask them how many ways he found to use the peanut. We've received our first Flat Teddy back. Charlie's grandparents sent us the Teddy back from Maryland and D. C. We enjoyed listening to what Teddy did on his trip.

Our lost and found is overflowing!!

 

We have three huge bags of lost items in addition to our normal lost and found.

 

If your child is missing an item please come and claim it.  Students can also look through the lost and found prior to the start of the school day or after lunch.

 

We are planning on donating any unclaimed items at the end of February :)

 

Career Day Speakers!

Please volunteer for Sope Creek’s annual Career Day on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. This event for grades 1-5 will take place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Our counselors are recruiting speakers to address students about their career paths and the preparation necessary for career success. We've had a great time learning all about Teddy Roosevelt. We painted a teddy bear and wrote down all the facts we've discovered about this special man. Next week we will start our study of George Washington Carver. He was an amazing man that found many different uses for the peanut.  Ask your children about him next week.

In math we have worked on fractions and have divided things into 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. We had a terrific time making our fraction pizzas and will write about them  and then send them home for you to see. Next week we will start our chapter on time and using a calendar.

Media Center tomorrow!

We're enjoying our study of Teddy Roosevelt. We've learned many important facts about him. We've learned how the teddy bear was named after him. We will be having teddy bear day.I will be asking each child to bring in a teddy bear. We will be using them for our math lesson. If your child doesn't have a bear, I will have extras that they can borrow for the lesson. Look for a note to come home telling you what day we will be having teddy bear day.

In math we had so much funlearning all about graphs. They loved asking questions to their friends and making tally, bar and picture graphs. They all did an awesome job on their test. We are now starting our chapter on fractions and will learn about equal parts. Next week we will make our own fraction pizzas. After our chapter on fractions we will start time.

Next week I will be sending home information about Valentine's Day. We will be using covered shoe boxes for our delivery system. Please help your child cover a shoebox with paper. Cover the box and lid separately so they can open it. Decorate the box at home and have their name clearly displayed on the top of the box. Be creative and look for additional info on Monday.

Don't forget-First grade will be performing for the next PTA meeting (February 2nd at 7:00 pm)!
If your child will be joining us, make sure your first grader is on stage in the cafeteria, ready to perform by 6:55 pm. First graders should wear clean jeans and a solid colored shirt.
