I'm so happy to see my parents this week for conferences! I have the best parents in the school! Thanks for all your support!

A reminder that I Love a Book Day will be Monday, October 31st. A parade through the school is scheduled for just after 8am. Continue to work on your boards and simple character costumes. We would love our parents to park early and line the halls to watch. I want to thank Melanie Landers in advance for agreeing to be our story mom that morning.  It's going to be awesome!

We will finish our study of magnets this week. The children have loved all our magnet centers and they will bring home their folders at the end of the week. Next week we will start our study of sound. On Wednesday, we will be have High Touch High Tech come in and teach us all about sound. Thanks to PTA/Foundation for sponsoring this in school field trip. Please have your children wear their class  t -shirts that day.

In math we're continuing place value and comparing numbers We will be using number lines and a hundred's grid to help with place value.

I'm looking forward to meeting each of you next week for conferences. Please be on time because I have many back to back conferences. If I run over and it is your appointment time, please be sure to knock and let me know I'm running behind. Just a reminder that the children will be dismissed each day at 12:20pm.

In science we're having a great time discovering what a magnet can do. We're going to do many kinds of activities and and find out what items are attracted to a magnet and what objects will repel a magnet. Our vocabulary for our magnet unit are attract, repel, poles and magnets. I have some exciting and educational centers set up for next week. The children will bring home their magnet folder at the end of next week. Thanks for letting your children bring in their magnets to share with the class.

In math we're talking about place value and tens and ones. I've read the story Funny Bones and we're making our own skeleton using craft sticks and macaroni. Each  child will have 10 craft sticks and will have 10 pieces  of macaroni on each and they will make their own Funny Bones character.

This week we're talking about nouns and what they are. We're going to travel around the school to discover how many nouns-person, place and things we can find and put them in the right category.

Reminder that I Love a Book Day is scheduled for Monday, October 31st. The parade through the school will start at about 8am. Be working on your child's "sandwich board" and simple character costume. Be able to tell these things about your book:

1. Title and author/illustrator

2. Main characters

3. Setting

4. What happened in the book?

Chik-Fil-A Spirit Night Tuesday

Please join us for our monthly Chick-fil-A Spirit Night on Tuesday, 10/18, any time between 5pm and 8pm!

While we dine and socialize, we will also be working on writing letters to service men and women as a part of The Bert Show's Big Thank You!  We will have paper and pencils available, and you will leave the letters with us.  We will make sure the letters get delivered.  More information on The Big Thank You, click here. 

Our goal is to have Sope Creek submit at least 1,100 letters!!!  If you would like to write letters at home, you are welcome to have your child bring them to the front office before October 26th.  They must be hand-written on 8.5 x 11'' paper and contain no political messages.

Thank you for supporting our school (a percentage of all proceeds help to fund field trips and staff development) and for supporting our troops!

As you can see we have become completely enthralled with Ben Franklin

We were fortunate to have a real live Ben Franklin come to our classrooms and share his life's accomplishments! We were able to ask him questions and share what we know to conclude our studies of our first American hero.

Next week we will begin our study of magnets. If any of the children have magnets they would like to bring in, please have them do that next week.

We finished the COGAT and now resumed our regular class routine. A few things on our learning agenda are synonyms, antonyms, compound words, writing a seasonal story, math fact families, and place value. We'll be  reviewing consonant digraphs: /ch/, /sh/, /wh/, /th/, and /ck/. Along with that we will work in some October favorites as our excitement builds for Halloween.

Please be sure to come to I Love a Book Day on October 31st at 8am. The children will be dressed up in their favorite storybook character and we will have a parade around the school. The parade should take about 20-30 minutes, so you can get to work after that. Don't forget your cameras!

We are excited to use the new hand held I-Respond "clickers" as we get to know this new technology for our first graders. We'll do several different exercises to practice  how to sign on and place our answer. The children are loving this new technology!

Conference letters will be coming home on Monday. Please send them back signed as soon as you can. If you find the time won't work, let me know that and I will give you another time.

COGAT testing started today.  We will test again Thursday and Friday.  Please make sure your child is well rested, gets a good breakfast, and is on time to school.  This is an abilities test to see how your child thinks... it is not a test you can study for. 

I Love a Book Day is scheduled for Monday, October 31st. Be thinking of a book your child loves. You will receive detailed information about this "do at home project" on Monday.

 

We have been busy studying Ben Franklin and went to the Media Center on Monday to research him.  The students learned about Pebble Go and brought home directions on how to access it at home so that they can show you! Today we had a great time making our 3 cornered hat, so we could look like Ben Franklin. Some of the children brought them home today and the rest will take them home tomorrow. I took a class picture and will send it to you. Next Tuesday, we will have a surprise visit from Mr. Franklin. Please be sure to ask your children all about the visit.
