News for February 22, 2008

Our short week was a very busy week . We finished our math unit on fractions and took our end of the unit test. Everyone did an awesome job on the test. Next week we'll start our money chapter. We will identify penny, nickel, dime and quarter and their values. We will be able to count different combinations of coins.

We're finishing up our study of American symbols and presidents. We've enjoyed learning all about the flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument, Statue of Liberty, The White House and the Capitol. We've learned all about Washington and Lincoln and compared their lives. The children will be bringing home a folder on our symbols. Please take time to go over this with them.

In Health next week, we'll be going over good dental health.

Don't forget that picture day is Tuesday, February, 26th. We'll have an individual picture as well as a class picture taken that day.

Thank you to David Musser for coming and being my helper parent this week. I really appreciate it!

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the wonderful surprises I received this week for Teacher Appreciation Week. I appreciate all that Christy Palladino did to organize this special week for me. I'm sending home a separate letter to let all of you know how thankful I am for you and your wonderful children!

Have a great weekend!

News for February 13, 2008

Language Arts- This week we read The Wild Woods. They enjoyed reading about the world of the woods and some animals that live there. We continued to work on summarizing  and retelling  the story, alphabetical order and telling and asking sentences. We will not have a story  or spelling words next week because of the short week.

Math-We've continued discussing fractions this week. These lessons helps the children differentiate between halves and fourths and will work toward other fractional parts. We've talked about the importance of fractions in their everyday life.

US Stamp Project-We're having a wonderful time sharing our USA stamps. Many of the stamps have very original and creative ideas and I can tell that much time was taken on the project. Some of the materials used were glitter, colored marshmallows, beans, lasagna noodles, feathers and clay. We will continue to share our stamps and they will be put in the hallway for the whole school to admire. Way to go Alligators!

Don't forget to register for the Fun Run! The Fun Run will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2008.

Thanks to Jill Harris for being my helper parent this week and we're looking forward to Noela Scarano coming and reading to the children.

Alligator News for February 8, 2008

Language Arts-This week we read Little Lumpty. This story was a great spin off of a favorite nursery rhyme. Our skills this week  were antonyms, possessives and -ed and -ing  endings. Next week we will read The Wild Woods.

Sounds Like Fun-We had an awesome time on Friday learning all about sound. We learned about vibrations, pitch, sound waves, frequency, intensity and quality.  We got to experiment using vibe sticks, tuning forks and other materials. Please ask your child what their favorite activity was during this time.

Social Studies-For the next two weeks we will be discussing why we celebrate President's Day and the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We will make our own watercolor flag and Washington Monument. We will discuss the symbols of the United States and make our own symbol book.  We look forward to sharing our stamp projects at the end of next week.

Math-We have finished our chapter on comparing two-digit numbers and the children did very well with the concepts.  We are starting chapter 17 which will deal with fractions.
