Art Day-Art Day is Friday, February 1st. If you haven't sent in a black shirt for your child to wear on Friday, have them wear the black shirt to school. I know the children will have an awesome time! Thank you to all that helped make this day possible.

Save the Date-The Fun Run this year will be on Saturday, March 15th from 9am-12pm. Flyers will sent home next week with more information. Please mark your calendars now.

Language Arts- This Week the children read Henny Penny.  We split the class in half and took turns acting out the story. The repeated reading and active involvement will help with comprehension.  They had a great time! We discussed what homophones are and started a list. As we think of more homophones, we will continue to add to our page.  Next week our story will be Little Lumpty.

Science-We are beginning our study of sound.  Some of our vocabulary for this unit will be sound, vibrate and pitch. We will do some investigations including closing our eyes and listening for sounds in school and outside. We will also have someone be "it" and ring a bell softly. The other children will have to guess where the sound is coming from. We'll finish our sound unit  on February 8th when we we'll have our in-school field trip presented by High Touch/High Tech.

Math-We continue Chapter 9 working on identifying ten more and ten less than a number. We will also be estimating a given number to the nearest ten.

Super Parents- Thanks to Ronise Crumpler for being my helper parent. And thanks in advance to Christine Daulby-Pesch for coming and reading to the class.

100th Day-We had an awesome 100th day of school.  We traveled to each 1st grade class and participated in an activity dealing with 100. We enjoyed munching on our trail mix and working on our 100 booklet. Thanks to those of you that sent in a food item for our class.

Language Arts-Next week we'll read Henny Penny. Key Words for the week will be last, oak, sky, story, surprise, they, where, while. During the week, we'll take turns playing the different characters in the story.

Math-This week we used the symbols for less than, greater than and equal to, to compare two-digit numbers. We also used a number line to discuss which number comes before, between or after a number.

Penny Wars- Penny Wars is continuing at Sope Creek through Friday the 17th. Penny Wars is a contest between homerooms to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  It is being sponsored by the Sope Creek Relay for Life Team.  Each homeroom will collect money each day in a labeled empty milk jug which will be held in the media center.  Each morning between 7:30- 7:50, children and adults may come to the media center to deposit money in their class jug.  One point is received for every penny in the container.

Conferences-Thank you so much for getting the conference forms back in so quickly.  We almost had all of them back the first day.  I look forward to talking with you about your child the week we come back to school after the MLK holiday.  Please make sure you arrive on time.  The conferences are back to back, and I want everyone to have their whole time. Please remember that everyday next week will be early dismissal at 12:20pm.

Science-I have sent home permission slips for our next in school "field trip". This program is called "Sounds Like Fun". This is another program that will be done by High Touch/ High Tech. We had this program last year and the children had a fantastic time learning all about sound.

Language Arts-This week we read Little Red Hen. On Friday we will practice taking a comprehension quiz on the story. Starting the week after conferences, we will take a weekly quiz on the story of the week. We will take this quiz every Friday. As part of our morning work on Fridays, we will reread the story before taking the quiz.

Math-We're finishing chapter 8 and will start chapter 9 at the end of the week. I'll share the end of the chapter test results with you at conferences.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.-With the three day weekend at hand, we wanted to learn more about Dr. King and his nonviolent message of peace. Next Monday, please pause and discuss with your child what they know about Dr. King and his legacy for our country.

Super Parents-Thanks in advance to Amanda Surry for being my helper mom this week and Jill Harris for coming and reading to the class on Friday. I really appreciate it!

Welcome Back 1/07/08

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful holiday.  I certainly did.  It was wonderful being with my family!  I am rested and ready for lots of study and learning the second half of the year.

Conferences-Your child's conference appointments will be sent home on Tuesday the 8th. Please try to attend at your assigned time. If you can't make the time I've assigned you, I'll be glad to reschedule. Please return the confirmation slip as soon as possible.

Language Arts-This week we will be reading  Eek! There's a Mouse in the House.  At the end of the week we'll have our Skills Test #3. I will grade them and share them with you at your child's conference. Next week we'll be reading The Little Red Hen. This is one folktale we love and we've heard many times.  I will also be sending  a letter home next week explaining our new weekly spelling tests. Please look for that letter on Monday.

Math-In our new math unit we'll be working with place value to 100. Be sure to check The Problem of the Day to see how your child is solving the daily problem. Many of the children can give me the answer, but still have difficulty explaining how they figured it out.
