News for December 13, 2007

Language Arts-This week the children enjoyed reading Splash, Splash. We continued to work on proper nouns and compound words. The word family this week was the -ub family. Next week the story will be Hop Jump.

Math-This week the children had fun identifying solid figures. We've been sorting and classifying them by the number of corners and flat surfaces. We've been relating these shapes to everyday objects. Next week we'll continue solid figures, and work on plane shapes and spatial sense.

Social Studies- This week we've started the study of Mexico and Canada. Each student has a small "suitcase" and we're rotating to each 1st grade classroom. Each teacher is teaching a different aspect of Canada and Mexico including map skills, the people, literature, symbols, food, sports, wildlife and Inuit Indians. In our class we will be learning about the languages of Mexico and Canada. Please ask your children each day which teacher they visited and what they found out about our neighbors to the north and south. Canada

Mexico

Super Parents-Thanks in advance to Catherine Phillips for coming and being my helper parent. And as always, we look forward to our story parent for this week, which will be Michelle Musser.

News for December 6, 2007

Language Arts-This week we read My Best Friend. The story is about two little girls who become "Best Friends".  The story shows ways that they are different and ways they are alike, but as they learn to appreciate each other's differences, they discover the true meaning of friendship.  We worked on the    -ug family and discussed proper nouns.  Next week we will read Splash, Splash.  We'll also be reading holiday and winter books. Key Words for next week will be animals, lake, feet, as, bee, cow, does, oh, again.

Math-We are continuing to learn about data graphing.  We have looked at graphs, made graphs, and learned to "interpret information" from our graphs.  We will continue our Chapter 7 study of graphs and we should have our test on this unit before the end of this week. Next week we will start the unit on solid figures, plane shapes and spatial sense.

Magnets-On Wednesday or Friday we will have our second indoor Field Trip.  We watched a Magnet Video from Georgia Public Television on Friday and then we watched Mrs. Aronson demonstrate all the different types of Magnets we have in our classroom to use for investigations.  We also discussed Magnet Safety and we know we can never put magnets around electronic equipment or computers.  We were also able to complete four different magnet experiments in our classroom last Friday.  The Indoor Field Trip will give us another opportunity to apply our knowledge about Magnets.

Holiday Party-On Thursday, December 20th, we'll be having our holiday party from 9:00-10:30am. I've met with Christy Palladino and it will be a fun time of games and crafts. Thank you to those parents that will be helping that day. It is really a fun way to start the winter break!

Super Parents-Thanks to Michelle Musser for taking time to be my helper parent this week. And we look forward to Friday, when Julia's mom or dad will be here to read to us. Thanks to those of you that sent in the marshmallows. We will start making our winter wonderland mural next week. Please check out our hallway when you visit and see what we're doing.
