Exciting News! First grade will be performing for the next PTA meeting (February 2nd at 7:00 pm)! If your child will be joining us, make sure your first grader is on stage in the cafeteria, ready to perform by 6:55 pm next Thursday evening. First graders should wear clean jeans and a solid colored shirt. Can’t wait to see you there!

Alligator News

We will be going to the Media Center tomorrow. Please return books, so we can take out new ones.

We can't wait for Friday and our 100th day of school. Thank you to those of you that sent in items for our 100 piece trail mix. We are looking forward to counting by 10's to 100!

We are learning about informational writing. Our first assignment is to write about the life of Harriet Tubman. We created a flow map with bullet points of her live in a time line. Next we are using our ideas to develop our story. We will be working on informational writing over the next few weeks.

In math we are having so much much fun working on different types of graphs. We've done tally graphs, bar graphs and pictographs. We will continue working on graphs for the next few days and then take our chapter test. After graphs we will start our chapter on fractions. I'm so pleased with the way the children are doing on their minute math tests. Keep practicing at home, so they continue to move to the next color.

Next week we will start our study of Teddy Roosevelt. Your child will be bringing home a class project on Tuesday or Wednesday. As part of our study of Teddy Roosevelt and his establishment of National Parks, we'll have your child mail "Traveling Teddy" to a relative or friend that would be willing to help with the project. If you have any questions after you receive the information, please call or email me.

Alligator News

Congratulations to my Alligators! We tied with the Brendel Butterflies for having the most children come to Chick-fil-A on Monday. They will be having their lunch on the stage with our Administrators on Monday. Thanks to all the parents that came out in the rain to help us win! You're the best!

We will be going to the Media Center on Friday to pick out new books. Be sure to return your books by then.

Our 100th day of school will be Friday, January 27th. We will be traveling to different 1st grade classes and each teacher will have a different activity to help celebrate the day. I will be sending home a sheet today to ask you if you might be able to offer some kind of food to help make our 100th day trail mix for the children to enjoy. If you can help, please send back the sheet and I will let you know what I need you to send in. thanks!

We are having a great time learning all about Harriet Tubman and what a brave person she was. Harriet Tubman had courage and risked her own freedom to help others escape slavery. Ask your children about her accomplishments.

In math we're finishing our chapter on money and will be working on graphs next week. I hope your children  showed you their first minute timed tests. Many of them have moved on to the 2nd or 3rd color. Good Job! Keep practicing at home.

Dear Students and Parents,

The first ever Sope Creek Family Movie Night is coming on January 20, 2012.  It is being sponsored by the Student Council.  We will be showing The Smurfs and National Treasure 2.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase, but you can BYOC (Bring Your Own Candy).  We will be expecting that you bring your parents because this is a family event – no drop offs, please.  So mark your calendar – January 20 7:00-9:00 in the cafeteria and the media center.  Optional donation for Must Ministries gladly accepted.

Happy New Year to you and your family! I'm looking forward to seeing your children back in school tomorrow. We have an exciting January coming up.

In math we will be working on money for the next two weeks. We'll continue exchanging coins and trading money to get equal amounts. Another area we will be focusing on this semester is memorizing our addition and subtraction facts to 18. Our goal will be to "beat the clock" every day for one minute and take a longer test on Friday. The students will begin with facts to 5 and progress at their own rate. Look for little strips of math facts to come home very soon in the "keep at home" pocket of your child's folder.

I want to remind you to continue using Raz Kids at home. As I review the activity log, I can see that many of you have been using the site and the results do show in your child's growth in comprehension and fluency. The children know that if they read the story by themselves without  being read to by the program that they can earn more points. Let's make it a New Year's Resolution to go up a reading level in a set amount of time by using Raz Kids every day for at least one story. Reading every day will show results!

Report cards will be coming home on Friday. Please call or email me with any questions you may have after the report cards come home. Please sign the signature card and return it in the brown envelope on Monday.

Reminders: No school on Monday for Martin Luther King Holiday.

We are so excited about our holiday party today! The children will enjoy making candy canes, snowman, jingle bell pencils, playing bingo and making a beautiful blanket we will be donating to Must Ministries. Thank you to Melanie Landers for organizing the party and all my wonderful moms that will be helping. I have a wonderful group of parents!
Just a reminder that school is out from Friday, December 23rd through Monday, January 9th. I hope all of you have a wonderful and relaxing vacation! Happy Holiday to everyone and I will see you in 2012!

Alligator News

Sacagawea-We had a wonderful time yesterday hearing all about Sacagawea. Thank you to our wonderful PTA for sponsoring this "Being There" experience. Our actress was perfect and kept us enchanted for over 45 minutes with her tales of the Shoshone  woman who braved the west to guide Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Ocean. The children were her Little Pomps and she taught them folklore and fact, all with the underlying message of respect. Please ask your children what they learned about her.

In math we're working on 3d shapes and will continue that next week. We will be making 3d shapes out of toothpicks and gum drops. We'll send them home next week after we finish them.

In writing we're working on what we can give that doesn't cost anything. They are working on some great ideas.

We're looking forward to a great holiday party next Thursday the 22nd. We have some great centers planned for the children.

 

CoGat Scores are In

We have received first grade CogAT scores.  The vendor does not distribute individual score reports for students/parents.  If you would like a copy of your child's scores, please contact the teacher.

The CogAT measures reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. Reasoning skills develop gradually throughout a person’s lifetime and at different rates for different individuals. We will be going to the Media Center tomorrow. Please have your children return their books if they have finished them.

Reminder about Polar Express and Pajama Day-This Friday we will be having a guest read Polar Express as we relax and wear our comfortable pajamas and sip hot chocolate. Here are the guidelines for Pajama Day: Please be sure your child is dressed warmly. Weather permitting, we will go out to recess, so they need shoes to change into if they wear their slippers to school. They can wear their pajamas on top of their clothes, if their pajamas are not warm enough. This is going to be a terrific day!

In math we're counting money this week. We're learning to start with the coin that is worth the most and counting on. Please practice counting quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies to one dollar. We will also be counting bills to $20.00. This is a very difficult skill for first graders, so don't be discouraged if they don't get the concept right away.

We are learning all about Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea over the next two weeks. We will be making our own tiny canoes and traveling over the same route they traveled to the Pacific Ocean. Please ask your children what they took on their travels and what they found along the way.
